A federal prosecution in Massachusetts has established a sustained internal embezzlement operation spanning nearly a decade, centered on payroll manipulation, financial control consolidation, and unauthorized fund diversion across two separate medical practices. The case reflects a high-trust administrative position leveraged into a long-duration financial extraction scheme.
Adam Gentile, 39, of Sudbury, formerly of Hudson, has pleaded guilty to three counts of wire fraud following a federal investigation into financial misconduct conducted between 2015 and 2024. Sentencing is scheduled for July 16, 2026 before U.S. District Judge Margaret R. Guzman.
The scheme originated shortly after Gentile assumed an administrative role at his first employer, a medical practice where he was promoted to office manager. In that position, Gentile obtained direct control over payroll processing and internal financial recordkeeping. From approximately 2015 through November 2020, Gentile issued unauthorized payments to himself exceeding $4.5 million. These payments were frequently disguised as legitimate compensation entries, including bonuses, allowing the transactions to bypass routine scrutiny.
In addition to inflated payroll distributions, Gentile used the employer’s financial accounts to pay personal credit card balances, integrating personal liabilities directly into business expenditures. The combination of payroll authority and financial access created a closed-loop control environment, eliminating independent oversight and enabling sustained unauthorized withdrawals.
In 2021, Gentile transitioned to a second medical practice, where he again secured a position with sole responsibility for payroll operations. The scheme resumed with similar execution methods. From April 2021 through May 2024, Gentile issued additional unauthorized payments to himself totaling more than $3.3 million. As with the prior scheme, these payments were often recorded as bonuses to maintain the appearance of legitimacy within internal accounting systems.
Funds obtained from the second employer were used for multiple personal expenditures, including the payoff of personal credit obligations, residential property upgrades in Hudson, and capital contributions to a separate side business operated concurrently with his employment. The use of employer accounts for direct personal enrichment indicates a continuation of the same operational model, adapted across two independent organizations.
Across both entities, the total financial impact exceeded $7.8 million. The duration and scale of the scheme were enabled by the concentration of financial authority within a single role, combined with the absence of independent verification mechanisms for payroll and account disbursements. The case reflects a systemic vulnerability in administrative financial structures where segregation of duties is not enforced.
Wire fraud charges carry a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison, in addition to supervised release and financial penalties that may include fines up to $250,000 or twice the gross loss associated with the offense. Sentencing will be determined under federal statutes and U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.
The case was announced by U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley and the Boston Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Investigative support was provided by the Leominster Police Department. Prosecution is being conducted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kaitlin J. Brown.
The operational pattern demonstrated in this case highlights the risk profile associated with centralized financial authority in small to mid-sized organizations, particularly in healthcare environments where administrative roles often combine payroll processing, accounting oversight, and financial access. The absence of layered verification, audit controls, and transaction monitoring created conditions where unauthorized financial activity could persist undetected over extended periods.
