A federal arson case in Louisiana has exposed the destruction of a religious institution that served as the only Catholic place of worship in Caldwell Parish, with the attack occurring immediately before the start of Holy Week. The timing and target of the incident place the case within a broader category of crimes involving both property destruction and disruption of protected religious activity.

Anthony Dillon, Jr., 19, and James Dale Smith IV, 21, both of Columbia, have been charged in federal court with arson following the complete interior destruction of the parish’s sole Catholic church. The charges carry a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison, with a maximum exposure of up to 20 years, along with supervised release and financial penalties.

According to charging documents, the events leading to the fire began days earlier with a combination of theft-related activity and escalating conflict. Investigators allege that the defendants were residing in a location drawing unauthorized electrical power from the church. When that unauthorized connection was disrupted, and a separate dispute emerged involving a broken television sale, the situation escalated into a targeted act of retaliation.

In the early hours of March 27, 2026, Dillon and Smith allegedly returned to the church property, forcibly entering the building by breaking a window with a baseball bat. Once inside, the church was ransacked, with electronic equipment—including multiple televisions and a sound system—removed from the premises.

Following the theft, the defendants are accused of intentionally setting the structure on fire. Emergency responders arrived after a 911 call reported the blaze, but by the time the fire was brought under control, the interior of the church had been largely destroyed. The damage effectively eliminated the only Catholic worship site available to residents of Caldwell Parish.

The case carries broader implications due to the nature of the target. Religious institutions are protected under federal law, and attacks against them are evaluated not only as property crimes but also as actions that interfere with the ability of communities to gather and practice their faith. The timing—immediately before Holy Week, one of the most significant periods in the Christian calendar—intensifies the impact on the affected community.

The investigation is being led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with support from the Louisiana State Fire Marshal, the Caldwell Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Federal coordination in cases of this nature typically focuses on origin analysis, accelerant identification, and reconstruction of entry and ignition points to establish intent.

Prosecution is being handled by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Louisiana, with assistance from federal legal staff assigned to the case.

If convicted, the defendants face significant federal penalties reflecting both the destructive nature of the act and the protected status of the institution involved.
