DUAL FATALITY DUI CRASH — WYOMING FEDERAL COURT SENTENCES DRIVER IN HEAD-ON COLLISION THAT KILLED MOTHER AND UNBORN CHILD

A federal sentencing in the District of Wyoming has concluded in a fatal DUI case stemming from a head-on collision on the Wind River Indian Reservation, where reckless driving behavior combined with alcohol impairment resulted in the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child.

Damion Loneman Jr., 21, of Pocatello, Idaho, was sentenced to 36 months’ imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter. The court also ordered $48,765.76 in restitution, covering funeral expenses and associated medical costs tied to the fatal incident.

The collision occurred on November 8, 2024, along the Blue-Sky Highway near Ethete, Wyoming. According to court findings, Loneman was traveling southbound and attempted to overtake another vehicle by entering the northbound lane, initiating a dangerous passing maneuver that resulted in a direct head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle.

The impacted vehicle carried a family unit: a male driver, his pregnant fiancée, and their young child. The force of the collision produced immediate catastrophic injuries. The pregnant woman sustained critical trauma and later died, along with her unborn child. The young child suffered a severe head injury, while the driver sustained a fractured ankle.

Witness statements confirmed that the defendant’s maneuver involved unsafe passing at speed, with no environmental or mechanical factors contributing to the crash. Investigators ruled out vehicle malfunction, identifying the cause as driver behavior under impairment conditions.

Post-incident analysis determined that Loneman had consumed alcohol prior to operating the vehicle. Toxicological assessment placed his blood alcohol concentration within an estimated range of 0.085 to 0.15 at the time of the crash, exceeding legal limits and indicating impaired motor control, delayed reaction time, and diminished situational awareness.

Federal prosecutors proceeded with charges following a formal indictment on November 19, 2025, with the defendant entering a guilty plea on January 6, 2026. Sentencing was imposed on April 2, 2026, in Casper by U.S. District Court Judge Scott W. Skavdahl.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with prosecution led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Elmore. U.S. Attorney Darin Smith stated that the incident reflects the irreversible consequences of impaired driving, emphasizing the compounded loss of both a mother and an unborn child as a result of a preventable act.

The case reinforces a recurring enforcement pattern across federal jurisdictions involving DUI-related fatalities on tribal lands, where roadway risk factors intersect with impaired driving behavior and limited margin for corrective response once a vehicle crosses into opposing traffic flow.
