More than four years after a shooting that left three teenagers dead inside a Garland convenience store, the case remains active at the federal level, with authorities escalating efforts to locate and apprehend the suspect now believed to be outside the United States.
Abel Elias Acosta, now 18, is the subject of a $50,000 reward offered for information leading to his arrest and conviction in connection with the December 26, 2021 triple homicide. At the time of the attack, Acosta was 14 years old. He has not been publicly located since the night of the killings.
The incident unfolded during the evening hours when Garland police responded to reports of multiple gunshot victims at a local convenience store. Officers arriving on scene found three juveniles deceased. The victims were 14, 16, and 17 years old. A fourth individual was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, surviving the attack. The setting—an everyday retail environment—became the site of a concentrated act of violence that unfolded in seconds and left long-term impact across families and the surrounding community.
Investigators identified Acosta as the alleged shooter shortly after the incident, leading to the issuance of a state warrant charging him with capital murder of multiple persons. The severity of the charge reflects both the number of victims and the nature of the attack, placing the case at the highest level of prosecutable homicide under Texas law.
The search for Acosta quickly expanded beyond local jurisdiction. Authorities determined that he fled following the shooting, and subsequent investigative work indicated that he likely crossed into Mexico. That movement triggered federal involvement, resulting in an additional charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution and the issuance of a federal arrest warrant in the Northern District of Texas.
The transition from a local homicide case to a cross-border fugitive investigation introduces additional complexity. Movement outside the United States requires coordination between federal agencies and international counterparts, as well as reliance on intelligence, tips, and surveillance rather than immediate jurisdictional enforcement. The passage of time further complicates identification and tracking, particularly as the suspect has aged from a minor into adulthood while remaining outside public view.
Authorities have maintained that Acosta should be considered armed and dangerous. The characterization is based on the nature of the original offense and the lack of contact since the incident. No verified sightings have been publicly confirmed, reinforcing the reliance on public cooperation as a critical component of the investigation.
The reward announcement reflects a renewed push to generate actionable information. Financial incentives are often deployed in cases where leads have diminished over time or where individuals with knowledge of a suspect’s location may be reluctant to come forward without additional motivation. The amount—$50,000—signals the priority level assigned to resolving the case.
Law enforcement officials continue to emphasize the impact on the victims’ families and the broader community. Cases involving juvenile victims carry extended social and emotional consequences, particularly when the suspect remains at large. The absence of resolution prolongs that impact, leaving both legal closure and accountability unresolved.
The investigative structure remains active across multiple levels. The FBI’s Dallas Field Office is leading the fugitive search, while local authorities and prosecutors continue to support the underlying homicide case. Coordination between agencies is essential in maintaining continuity, ensuring that evidence, warrants, and case status remain aligned as the search continues.
Public assistance remains a central component of the effort. Authorities are seeking information related to Acosta’s whereabouts, movements, or any individuals assisting him. Tips can be submitted anonymously, with confidentiality protections in place to encourage reporting without exposure.
The case remains defined by two timelines: the night of the attack and the years that followed without an arrest. The first established the severity of the crime. The second underscores the persistence of the search.
The reward is not a reopening of the case. It is a continuation of it—an attempt to convert time into pressure and information into action.

I appreciate authorities staying on the trail of this young man. If I was in law enforcement, these are the pictures I would look at every day even if four years have changed his appearance some. This is the kind of person law enforcement must be careful when chasing. Who knows what he is thinking but, as they guess, he is probably armed and may not hesitate to shoot first. I pray that he is apprehended soon.
Thank you for this article.
You’re very welcome, Chris.
You’re right about the persistence involved in cases like this. When a suspect remains at large for years, it becomes a long-term effort that relies on consistent review, updated intelligence, and public awareness. Even as appearances change over time, investigators work with evolving profiles, known associations, and behavioral patterns to keep the search active.
Your point about caution is well placed. Individuals wanted in violent cases are treated with a high level of risk consideration, and any approach is handled with that in mind to protect both law enforcement and the public.
The visibility you mentioned—keeping faces and cases in front of people—is a critical part of that process. Public recognition can still play a role, even years later.
Thank you again for the thoughtful comment, Chris. I hope all is well and I hope you have a great day today. 😎
