There are moments in life when time does not feel neutral. It does not feel like something we move through—it feels like something that is moving past us. There is a quiet pressure that builds, not always loud enough to be named, but strong enough to be felt. It shows up in the middle of the day, in the silence of the night, in the spaces between what we planned and what actually happened. It feels like we are being carried forward whether we are ready or not.
It begins to surface in the smallest ways. A day that ends faster than it should. A week that disappears before it ever feels complete. Conversations that feel rushed, moments that pass without being fully lived in. You start to notice that things you once had time for now feel like they are slipping away, not because they no longer matter, but because something else has taken their place without you even realizing it.
The strange part is that time itself has not changed. The clock does not move faster because we feel overwhelmed. The hours do not shorten because we are tired. Yet the experience of time becomes heavier, more urgent, more demanding. It begins to feel like something we are chasing instead of something we are given.
What changes is not time—it is awareness. The more you begin to see, the more you begin to understand, the less time feels like an endless resource. It starts to feel measured. It starts to feel accounted for. You begin to recognize that every decision carries weight, that every delay has consequence, and that not everything can be revisited the way it once could. That realization does not always come with clarity—it often comes with pressure.
There is also something deeper beneath it. A quiet knowing that life is moving forward whether we are aligned with it or not. That there are things we were meant to do, paths we were meant to walk, and moments we were meant to step into—and when we hesitate, when we delay, when we avoid what we already know, that pressure begins to build. Not because time is against us, but because we are not fully moving with what has already been placed in front of us.
Scripture speaks clearly about this reality, even if we do not always recognize it at first:
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1
There is a time for everything, and yet we often live as if there is not enough time for anything. We rush through what matters and linger in what does not. We delay what calls us forward and give our energy to things that leave us empty. And in doing so, we create the very pressure we believe time is placing on us.
Time does not rush us. It reveals us.
It shows us where we are aligned—and where we are not. It exposes what we value and what we avoid. And sometimes, the feeling of being rushed is not time slipping away, but truth catching up.
THE WEIGHT OF TIME IS NOT TIME ITSELF
What we feel is not time rushing us. What we feel is the weight of expectation, responsibility, and awareness. The more we see, the more we understand, the more we carry—the heavier each moment becomes.
When we were younger, time felt wide. It stretched. It waited. There was space to breathe without thinking about what was next. As life moves forward, that space becomes tighter. Responsibilities stack. Decisions carry consequences. The future is no longer abstract—it becomes something we are actively building, whether we feel ready or not.
That pressure creates the illusion that time is speeding up.
But the truth is this:
Time is steady.
We are the ones changing.
“Teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12
This verse does not tell us to fear time. It tells us to understand it. To recognize its value. To live with awareness, not panic.
WHY WE FEEL RUSHED
We feel rushed because we are aware of what we have not done.
We feel rushed because we know what we are capable of—and we have not fully stepped into it yet.
We feel rushed because we understand, deep down, that life is not endless in the way we once imagined.
And that awareness creates tension.
There is a gap between:
- who we are
- and who we know we are meant to be
That gap is where the pressure lives.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
This is one of the most overlooked commands in Scripture. It does not say “run faster.” It does not say “figure everything out.” It says be still.
Because stillness is where clarity returns.
THE WORLD TEACHES SPEED — GOD TEACHES TIMING
The world tells us:
Move faster
Do more
Keep up
Don’t fall behind
Everything is measured in output, in visibility, in movement. The faster you go, the more it seems like you are succeeding.
But God does not operate on human urgency.
God operates on purpose.
“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” — Isaiah 40:31
Waiting is not wasted time.
Waiting is alignment.
There is a difference between:
- being delayed
- and being prepared
We often confuse the two.
YOU ARE NOT LATE — YOU ARE BEING FORMED
This is where most people struggle.
They look at their life and feel behind. Behind others. Behind expectations. Behind where they thought they would be.
But God does not measure your life against someone else’s timeline.
He measures it against purpose.
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” — Jeremiah 29:11
What feels like delay is often development.
What feels like silence is often preparation.
What feels like time slipping away is often God shaping something deeper than what we can see in the moment.
THE TRUTH ABOUT TIME
Time is not your enemy.
Time is a gift that reveals what matters.
It exposes distractions.
It reveals priorities.
It forces truth to the surface.
And sometimes, it slows you down not to hold you back—but to keep you from moving in the wrong direction.
“My times are in thy hand.” — Psalm 31:15
That is the truth most people never fully accept.
Your time is not slipping out of control.
It is held.
A MOMENT OF STILLNESS
If time feels like it is rushing you right now, stop for a moment.
Not tomorrow. Not later.
Right now.
Breathe.
You are here.
You are still moving.
You are still being shaped.
And nothing that is meant for you is going to outrun you.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
We come before You with hearts that often feel rushed, overwhelmed, and uncertain. We try to keep up with everything around us, and in doing so, we lose sight of the peace You have already given us.
Lord, remind us that our time is in Your hands. Not in our fears, not in our doubts, and not in the pressure of the world—but in You.
Jesus, we thank You for Your sacrifice, for Your presence, and for the peace that You bring into our lives when everything else feels out of control. Help us to trust in Your timing, even when we do not understand it.
Holy Spirit, guide us into stillness. Quiet our minds when they race. Give us clarity when we feel lost. Strengthen us when we feel behind.
Teach us to live with purpose, not panic. With faith, not fear. With trust, not urgency.
And above all, remind us that we are never alone in this journey.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

What a great subject for our times (pun intended). Thank you for this wonderful piece on a subject that affects us all, John.
Here are some of my favorite lines:
“What changes is not time—it is awareness.”
“Time does not rush us. It reveals us.”
“But the truth is this:
Time is steady.
We are the ones changing.”
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
“Time is not your enemy.”
“Time is a gift that reveals what matters.”
“My times are in thy hand.” — Psalm 31:15
“That is the truth most people never fully accept.
Your time is not slipping out of control.
It is held.”
“And nothing that is meant for you is going to outrun you.”
I enjoyed all of this piece, John. As I am very aware that the time I have left is far less than the time I’ve already been given on this Earth, I do as you have suggested much more often than I used to. I stop, I breathe, and I pray.
You have put into words what most of us can’t and you have enforced all of it with scripture. I appreciate it. Thank you for sharing your prayer as well. Prayers like this keep us connected and sane.
God’s blessings…
You’re very welcome, Chris — and thank you. I really appreciate you taking the time to share this and for highlighting those lines. It means a lot to see how it connected with you.
I respect what you said about being more aware of your time and taking those moments to pause and pray. I myself try to do the same a lot more often than I used to.
I’m glad the scripture and the prayer resonated with you as well.
Thank you again, Chris, and God’s blessings to you and yours always. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for your kind words. May God bless you and yours always as well!
