FBI Returns Ancient Roman Grave Marker and Reliquary Urn to Italy Following Cultural Property Investigation

ROME, ITALY – The Federal Bureau of Investigation has repatriated two significant antiquities to the Italian government, including an ancient Roman funerary stone recovered in Louisiana and a reliquary urn recovered in Massachusetts, marking another coordinated effort to combat the illicit trafficking of cultural property.

The items were formally returned during a ceremony in Rome, concluding a multi-agency process involving U.S. and Italian authorities. The primary artifact, a Roman imperial-period marble epitaph, was recovered by the FBI New Orleans Field Office after being discovered by a local resident in May 2025. The individual reported finding the funerary tablet while clearing a backyard property and voluntarily turned the item over to federal authorities for evaluation and preservation.

Following its recovery, the artifact was transferred to the FBI’s specialized Art Crime Team in November 2025. Federal investigators worked in coordination with the FBI Legal Attaché Office in Rome, which maintained ongoing communication with Italian cultural officials to verify provenance and facilitate the lawful return of the item.

The second artifact, a reliquary urn believed to contain the remains of a possible saint, was recovered by the FBI Boston Field Office. Both items were determined to be of historical and cultural significance, requiring repatriation under international cultural property protection frameworks.

The return was conducted under the provisions of the U.S.-Italy Cultural Property Agreement (CPA), a longstanding bilateral agreement designed to restrict the importation of protected Italian antiquities into the United States. The agreement serves a dual function: preserving cultural heritage and disrupting illicit markets that are often linked to organized criminal activity.

Federal authorities emphasized that the illegal trafficking of antiquities remains a persistent global issue, frequently intersecting with broader criminal enterprises, including smuggling networks and financial exploitation schemes. The FBI’s Art Crime Team operates as a specialized unit dedicated to identifying, recovering, and returning stolen or unlawfully exported cultural artifacts.

The repatriation of these items reflects continued cooperation between U.S. law enforcement and international partners to ensure that historically significant objects are returned to their countries of origin and preserved within their proper cultural context.

Officials noted that the Cultural Property Agreement with Italy is the oldest such bilateral agreement between the United States and a European nation, reinforcing long-term collaboration in protecting archaeological heritage and ensuring legitimate access for academic, scientific, and cultural study.

Additional repatriations were conducted as part of the same initiative, with multiple artifacts returned under the agreement during the Rome ceremony.
