A federal jury in Del Rio, Texas has convicted Bobby Brandon Galvan, 30, of Dale, Texas, on two counts of firearms trafficking following a trial that detailed a structured pipeline moving high-powered weapons from the United States into the hands of a Mexican cartel. The case is part of a broader multi-defendant investigation targeting transnational criminal activity involving weapons smuggling, money movement, and coordinated logistics across the U.S.–Mexico corridor.
Galvan, also known as “Puravidarecia,” was identified during trial proceedings as an affiliate of La Nueva Familia Michoacana (LNFM), a cartel formally designated on February 20, 2025, as both a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist entity by the U.S. Department of State. That designation elevates the legal and national security implications of cases involving material support or facilitation tied to the group.
According to evidence presented in court, Galvan participated in a firearms trafficking operation between September 16, 2023, and April 14, 2024, during which he purchased at least 24 AK-47–style rifles in Texas. Investigators traced those weapons to Toluca, Mexico, where they were ultimately used by cartel operatives. One of the trafficked rifles was recovered following a violent confrontation between cartel members and Mexican law enforcement, directly linking the procurement pipeline in the United States to active conflict zones.
The investigation established that Galvan functioned as a straw purchaser within a larger network. In this role, he acquired firearms on behalf of others, attempted to obscure their origin by altering or removing serial numbers, and transferred them to co-conspirators responsible for cross-border movement. This method is a common tactic in firearms trafficking operations, allowing networks to distance end users from the point of legal purchase while complicating tracing efforts.
At trial, federal prosecutors identified Johnny Hurtado Olascoaga, known as “El Pez,” and Jose Alfredo Hurtado Olascoaga, known as “El Fresa,” as leaders within the broader criminal conspiracy. Their involvement situates the case within a higher-tier organizational structure tied to cartel command operations rather than isolated trafficking activity.
Galvan was arrested on July 29, 2025, and indicted on August 20, 2025, on charges including conspiracy to traffic firearms and straw purchasing. He is one of 26 defendants named in the larger case, which includes charges ranging from firearms trafficking to illegal alien smuggling and money laundering. To date, 18 co-conspirators have entered guilty pleas and are awaiting sentencing.
The case represents one of the early federal prosecutions applying the updated firearms trafficking statute, signaling an expanded legal framework for addressing the movement of weapons into transnational criminal networks. If sentenced to the statutory maximum, Galvan faces up to 40 years in federal prison for each count.
The investigation was conducted through the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF), a joint operational structure integrating multiple federal agencies. Participating agencies included the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, and international liaison elements, including the FBI’s Legal Attaché Office in Mexico City. The coordinated effort reflects the cross-border nature of the operation and the reliance on intelligence sharing to map the movement of weapons from U.S. purchase points to cartel-controlled regions.
Chief U.S. District Judge Alia Moses presides over the case, with prosecution led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Warsame Galaydh and Brett Miner.
The case underscores a persistent enforcement priority: disrupting the supply chain that enables cartel violence by targeting the acquisition and transfer of firearms before they reach operational use. The conviction illustrates how domestic procurement channels can be leveraged to sustain armed activity abroad, reinforcing the importance of coordinated federal investigations aimed at dismantling trafficking networks at every stage.
