Operation Viper Fugitive Sweep Leads to 29 Arrests, Firearm Recoveries, and Major Narcotics Seizures Across Central Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS — The FBI Springfield Field Office, alongside federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, has announced the results of Operation Viper, a coordinated fugitive apprehension initiative targeting violent offenders and high-impact criminal activity throughout eastern Central Illinois.

Authorities stated the five-day enforcement surge resulted in 29 arrests, the recovery of seven illegally possessed firearms, and the seizure of narcotics and currency tied to suspected drug trafficking activity.

According to federal officials, Operation Viper focused on identifying and apprehending fugitives considered significant contributors to violent criminal activity within the region. Investigators stated the operation concentrated resources on individuals with active warrants, repeat violent offender histories, narcotics distribution involvement, weapons offenses, and other criminal conduct viewed as high-risk to community safety.

Law enforcement personnel conducting the operation seized large quantities of suspected narcotics during the enforcement campaign, including approximately 4,195.4 grams of marijuana, 781.1 grams of unidentified pills, 50 grams of cocaine, and 234.2 grams of methamphetamine.

Authorities additionally recovered five handguns and two assault-style rifles during searches and arrest operations connected to the initiative.

Federal officials also confirmed the seizure of more than $8,264 in narcotics-related currency believed to be connected to illegal drug trafficking activity operating within the targeted areas.

The operation extended across multiple jurisdictions throughout eastern Central Illinois and involved coordinated warrant service operations, fugitive tracking efforts, targeted enforcement actions, and intelligence-sharing between participating agencies.

FBI Springfield Special Agent in Charge Ryan Presley stated the operation demonstrated the importance of coordinated multi-agency enforcement operations targeting violent offenders and organized criminal activity.

“The success of Operation Viper highlights the seamless integration of federal, state, and local law enforcement,” Presley stated. “No single agency can combat violent crime alone, but, by pooling resources, immediate threats to the public were eliminated.”

Presley additionally stated that sustained pressure against violent criminal organizations, repeat offenders, armed suspects, and narcotics trafficking operations remains a continuing enforcement priority throughout the region.

Decatur Chief of Police Brad Allen stated the operation represented a direct effort to disrupt criminal activity contributing to violence, narcotics distribution, and illegal firearm possession within local communities.

“This operation sent a clear message that illegal activity has no place in our communities,” Allen stated. “I’m proud of the work our officers and partner agencies did to take 29 offenders into custody and remove significant quantities of narcotics and weapons from our streets.”

Allen further stated the operation was intended to strengthen neighborhood safety conditions while targeting individuals believed responsible for escalating violence and criminal activity in affected communities.

Federal authorities stated Operation Viper was led by the FBI Springfield Field Office with substantial support provided by the United States Marshals Service, the Decatur Police Department, and the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials noted the operation also involved the United States Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, a large-scale multi-agency enforcement network operating throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin.

The Central District of Illinois task force structure includes personnel from numerous law enforcement agencies and prosecutorial offices, including local police departments, county sheriff’s offices, state correctional apprehension teams, Homeland Security Enforcement and Removal Operations units, state attorney offices, and specialized counterdrug enforcement components.

Authorities stated fugitive task force operations of this scale are designed to combine investigative intelligence, tactical enforcement capabilities, warrant execution resources, and interagency coordination to locate violent offenders more rapidly and reduce jurisdictional gaps frequently exploited by repeat criminal offenders attempting to evade arrest.

Federal investigators indicated additional reviews and follow-up investigations tied to narcotics distribution activity, firearm possession violations, and criminal conspiracy connections may continue following the completion of the initial enforcement surge.
