ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A Prewitt woman has pleaded guilty in federal court after admitting to stabbing a man during a dispute earlier this year on the Navajo Nation.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico, Naomi Martinez, 24, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon for the January 2026 attack.
According to court documents, the assault occurred on January 6, 2026, when Martinez kicked the victim, identified in court records as John Doe, before stabbing him multiple times in the face, head, and neck with a kitchen knife.
Federal prosecutors said the attack caused serious bodily injury to the victim. Court records do not indicate the circumstances that led to the dispute or provide additional information regarding the victim’s condition following the assault.
Because the offense occurred within Indian Country and involved an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, the case falls under federal jurisdiction pursuant to federal law governing certain major crimes committed in tribal communities.
By pleading guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon, Martinez accepted responsibility for the offense. She now faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison at sentencing. A sentencing date has not yet been announced.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, announced the guilty plea.
The investigation was conducted by the Gallup Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office with assistance from the Navajo Nation Police Department and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Mondragon is prosecuting the case.
