FBI Offers $25,000 Reward in Unsolved 2023 Murder of Patrick Carlow Sr. on Pine Ridge Reservation

OGLALA, South Dakota — The FBI is renewing its appeal for information in the unsolved killing of Patrick Carlow Sr., 73, announcing a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his murder.

More than three years after Carlow’s death, investigators continue to pursue leads as they work to bring answers to his family and justice to the case.

According to investigators, Carlow was found dead inside his residence on the morning of May 19, 2023, near Oglala, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

The investigation determined that the homicide most likely occurred during the overnight hours before his body was discovered.

Authorities reported no signs of forced entry into the home, a detail investigators believe is significant. Based on the evidence collected during the investigation, law enforcement believes the individual or individuals responsible likely knew Carlow personally and were familiar with both his residence and its layout.

Investigators have not publicly disclosed additional details regarding the manner of death or whether any potential suspects have been identified.

As part of its renewed investigative efforts, the FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Federal investigators continue to urge anyone with information—regardless of how minor it may seem—to come forward. Information that appears insignificant on its own can often become an important piece of a larger investigation when combined with other evidence.

In announcing the reward, FBI Minneapolis Field Office Special Agent in Charge Christopher D. Dotson emphasized the Bureau’s commitment to seeking justice for victims and their families, stating that one person coming forward with the right information could provide the breakthrough investigators have been searching for.

Cold case homicide investigations frequently remain active for years as investigators continue reviewing evidence, conducting interviews, reexamining forensic findings, and following newly developed leads. Advances in forensic science and renewed public attention have helped solve numerous homicide cases long after they first occurred.

The investigation is receiving additional attention through the FBI’s Operation Steadfast Promise, a nationwide initiative that directs additional federal resources toward violent crime investigations affecting Tribal communities.

The case is also part of Operation Not Forgotten, an initiative focused on unresolved violent crimes in Indian Country. The program works to provide investigative support, victim services, and additional resources aimed at advancing long-unsolved homicide and violent crime investigations.

Federal officials have stated that these initiatives are intended to strengthen partnerships with Tribal law enforcement agencies while improving public safety and increasing investigative resources for cases involving violent crime, gang activity, crimes against children, fugitive investigations, and unsolved homicides.

The FBI has not announced any arrests in connection with Carlow’s death, and the homicide investigation remains active.
