FBI Announces $25,000 Reward in Unsolved 2023 Homicide on Pine Ridge Reservation

RAPID CITY, South Dakota — The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is renewing its appeal for public assistance in the unsolved 2023 homicide of Patrick Carlow Sr., 73, announcing a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his death.

According to the FBI, Carlow was found deceased inside his home near Oglala, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Reservation, during the morning hours of May 19, 2023. Investigators believe the homicide occurred sometime during the previous night.

Federal investigators determined that Carlow’s death was the result of a homicide. Authorities reported finding no signs of forced entry, leading investigators to believe the individual or individuals responsible may have been familiar with both Carlow and the layout of his residence.

Although investigators have not publicly identified any suspects, the absence of forced entry has remained a significant component of the investigation. Law enforcement believes the circumstances indicate the offender or offenders may have had prior knowledge of the home or a relationship with the victim, though investigators have not disclosed additional details regarding a possible motive.

More than three years after the killing, the case remains unsolved, prompting the FBI to renew its request for assistance from the public. Operation Not Forgotten serves as a companion initiative dedicated specifically to unresolved violent crimes in Tribal communities. The program focuses on reopening unsolved homicide cases, identifying new investigative leads, providing continued support to victims’ families, and pursuing justice for offenders who have not yet been held accountable.

The FBI continues urging anyone with information regarding the death of Patrick Carlow Sr. to contact law enforcement. Investigators emphasize that even information that may appear insignificant could prove valuable as the investigation continues.
