One of the coldest worlds ever directly imaged has surprised astronomers once again, revealing an atmosphere unlike anything previously observed and offering a remarkable glimpse into the complex weather systems of distant planetary worlds.
For more than a decade, a mysterious magenta-colored world located approximately 57 light-years from Earth has puzzled astronomers. Nicknamed the “Pink Planet,” GJ 504 b has remained one of the most unusual objects ever discovered beyond our solar system. Its distinctive rosy appearance, remarkably cool temperature, and uncertain origin have made it one of astronomy’s most intriguing mysteries.
Now, thanks to the unprecedented capabilities of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), scientists have taken their most detailed look yet at the distant world—and what they found was entirely unexpected.
Researchers have identified evidence of exotic salt clouds suspended high within the planet’s atmosphere, marking the first time such clouds have been identified as a critical component needed to explain the spectrum of a planetary-mass object. The discovery is reshaping scientists’ understanding of how cold giant worlds evolve and demonstrates just how diverse planetary atmospheres throughout the universe can become.
A World Unlike Any Other
GJ 504 b was first discovered in 2013 orbiting a Sun-like star approximately 57 light-years away. Unlike many giant exoplanets that glow with intense heat from their recent formation, GJ 504 b has spent billions of years cooling.
Today its atmospheric temperature is estimated at roughly 290 degrees Celsius (about 556 degrees Fahrenheit). While that may sound extraordinarily hot by Earth’s standards, it places GJ 504 b among the coldest planetary-mass companions ever directly imaged around another star. Its relatively low temperature is one reason astronomers have struggled to study it in detail for more than a decade.
The planet’s striking pink appearance is believed to result from its cool atmospheric conditions interacting with its chemistry, giving the distant world a deep magenta hue unlike any planet in our own solar system. NASA has described its color as resembling a dark cherry blossom.
James Webb Opens a New Window
Until recently, astronomers could observe GJ 504 b only as a faint point of light. Webb changed that by opening an entirely new window into the planet’s atmosphere.
Using its powerful infrared instruments, Webb successfully separated the planet’s faint light from the overwhelming glare of its parent star. Scientists then analyzed that light using spectroscopy, a technique that breaks light into individual wavelengths, allowing researchers to identify the chemical fingerprints of molecules within an atmosphere.
The observations revealed an unexpectedly rich chemical mixture. Scientists detected signatures of water vapor, methane, carbon dioxide, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and several isotopic forms of carbon monoxide. Those discoveries alone would have made the observations significant.
Then the atmospheric models stopped making sense. Every simulation failed to reproduce Webb’s observations until researchers introduced one additional ingredient.
Salt clouds.
Only after accounting for clouds composed of vaporized mineral salts did the models finally align with what Webb observed. The result provided the strongest evidence yet that exotic salt clouds exist high within the atmosphere of GJ 504 b.
Weather Beyond Imagination
Clouds on Earth consist primarily of condensed water droplets or ice crystals. The Pink Planet is a completely different environment.
At hundreds of degrees above Earth’s average temperatures, familiar weather simply cannot exist. Instead, scientists believe clouds may form from vaporized minerals that condense high within the atmosphere, creating layers unlike anything found anywhere in our solar system.
The discovery demonstrates that planetary weather can be dramatically more diverse than previously imagined. Understanding these unusual cloud systems also helps astronomers refine atmospheric models used to study countless other exoplanets observed by Webb.
Is It Even a Planet?
Ironically, one of the biggest questions surrounding the Pink Planet remains unanswered.
Astronomers are still uncertain whether GJ 504 b should technically be classified as a giant exoplanet or a brown dwarf, sometimes called a “failed star.”
Current observations suggest it possesses roughly 25 times the mass of Jupiter, placing it near the boundary separating massive planets from the smallest brown dwarfs.
Because its origin remains uncertain, researchers often describe it as a planetary-mass companion, acknowledging that its true nature has yet to be fully determined. The atmospheric chemistry observed by James Webb appears to favor a planet-like formation history, but additional research will be needed before scientists can confidently resolve the debate.
Why This Discovery Matters
Salt clouds may sound like an obscure scientific curiosity. In reality, the discovery represents another major milestone in humanity’s ability to study worlds beyond our own solar system.
Only a few decades ago, astronomers could detect distant planets only indirectly. Today, James Webb is allowing researchers to identify the chemistry, weather patterns, cloud composition, and atmospheric dynamics of worlds located dozens of light-years away. Every new observation improves scientists’ understanding of how planets form, how atmospheres evolve, and which environments may ultimately prove capable of supporting life elsewhere in the universe.
The Pink Planet may not resemble Earth in any meaningful way. Yet it reminds us that nature continues producing worlds far stranger—and far more beautiful—than human imagination alone could ever invent.
