FBI Renews Appeal for Information Four Years After Mahmood Shah Habibi Disappeared in Afghanistan

Washington, D.C. — August 10, 2026 — The FBI Washington Field Office has renewed its appeal for information concerning the disappearance of Afghan American businessman Mahmood Shah Habibi, who vanished near his home in Kabul, Afghanistan, on August 10, 2022. Four years later, his condition and location remain unknown, and he has not communicated with his family since being detained.

“The FBI remains committed to bringing Mahmood home to his loved ones, including his daughter who hasn’t seen her father since before her first birthday,” said Michael Burgwald, special agent in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office’s Counterterrorism Division. “If you have information about his whereabouts, please contact the FBI. Help us finish this investigation. Help us reunite this family.”

At the time of his disappearance, Habibi worked as a consultant for Asia Consultancy Group, a telecommunications company based in Kabul. He had previously served as Afghanistan’s director of civil aviation, giving him professional experience within the country’s aviation and telecommunications sectors.

According to the FBI, the Taliban’s General Directorate of Intelligence took Habibi and his driver from Habibi’s vehicle on August 10, 2022. They were detained along with 29 other employees of Asia Consultancy Group. Habibi has not been heard from since that day, and the Taliban has not provided information concerning his condition or where he is being held.

The absence of verified information has left investigators and Habibi’s family without confirmation of his health, treatment, or present circumstances. The passage of four years has not ended the FBI’s investigation or its effort to identify individuals who may possess direct or indirect knowledge of the detention.

The FBI Washington Field Office released a missing-person poster for Habibi in 2025 to expand public awareness of the case and support the continuing search for information. The poster places Habibi’s identity, background, and disappearance before individuals who may have witnessed events surrounding his detention or learned information about his location afterward.

The FBI’s public appeal is not limited to eyewitnesses. A person may possess information acquired through professional contacts, former employment, personal relationships, travel, communications, or knowledge of facilities where detainees were taken. Information that appears incomplete may still assist investigators when compared with evidence and tips already received.

The U.S. State Department announced a reward of up to $5 million in 2025 for information leading to Habibi’s location, recovery, and return. The reward remains connected to those specific objectives and reflects the continuing effort to determine where Habibi was taken and bring him home safely.

Investigators are urging anyone with knowledge of Habibi’s disappearance or detention to come forward. Individuals providing information can request confidentiality, an important protection for sources who may fear retaliation or other consequences connected to the case.

Information can be submitted through tips.fbi.gov. Tipsters may also contact their local FBI field office or the nearest United States Embassy or Consulate. The FBI continues to seek information capable of advancing the investigation, establishing Habibi’s present location, and ending four years of uncertainty for his family.
