Former USDA Employee Indicted on Federal Charges for Allegedly Threatening Law Enforcement Officer

Concord, New Hampshire — August 7, 2026 — A former United States Department of Agriculture employee has been indicted on federal charges accusing him of sending threatening emails to a federal law enforcement officer.

Keith Bergstrom, 40, was indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of interstate communications of threats under Title 18, United States Code, Section 875(c).

U.S. Attorney Erin Creegan for the District of New Hampshire announced the indictment on Friday.

Federal prosecutors allege that Bergstrom transmitted emails containing threats directed at the officer. Each count represents a separate alleged violation involving the use of interstate communications.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office did not identify the federal law enforcement officer, disclose the contents of the emails or state when the messages were sent.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office also did not disclose the circumstances that preceded the communications, the nature of Bergstrom’s former employment with the USDA or whether his previous government position was connected to the alleged threats.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office did not identify a suspected motive or indicate whether the emails were sent directly to the officer, referenced other individuals or contained demands.

An indictment means a federal grand jury determined that sufficient probable cause existed for the charges to proceed in court. It is not a finding that Bergstrom committed the offenses.

Interstate communications of threats cases can involve messages transmitted through email, telephone systems, electronic platforms or other communication methods that cross state lines or use interstate communication systems. Bergstrom’s charges specifically concern emails cited in the indictment.

Each count carries a maximum statutory sentence of five years in federal prison. The maximum penalty is not an automatic sentence and does not establish what punishment Bergstrom would receive if convicted.

Any sentence would be imposed by a federal district court judge after considering the counts of conviction, applicable federal statutes, the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legally relevant factors.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Yasir Sadat is prosecuting the case for the District of New Hampshire.

The allegations contained in the indictment have not been proven in court. Keith Bergstrom is presumed innocent unless and until the government proves his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
