Concord, New Hampshire — August 6, 2026 — A Massachusetts man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly using a firearm to rob a financial institution in Nashua, New Hampshire.

Joseph Sawyer, 52, is charged with armed bank robbery in connection with the June 12, 2026 robbery of St. Mary’s Bank at 4 Northwest Boulevard.

U.S. Attorney Erin Creegan for the District of New Hampshire announced the indictment on Thursday.

Federal prosecutors allege that Sawyer used a firearm while committing the robbery. The U.S. Attorney’s Office did not disclose the type of weapon involved, the amount of money allegedly taken or whether any employees, customers or responding officers were physically injured.

Authorities have also not released details concerning Sawyer’s alleged actions inside the institution, the length of the robbery or how investigators identified him as a suspect.

Sawyer will appear in federal court at a later date. The U.S. Attorney’s Office did not announce an arraignment date or state whether he is currently being held in custody.

An indictment means a federal grand jury determined that probable cause existed for the charge to proceed. It is not a conviction or a finding of guilt.

Armed bank robbery is treated more seriously than an unarmed robbery because the alleged use of a dangerous weapon can place employees, customers and responding law enforcement officers at an immediate risk of death or bodily harm.

Federal jurisdiction can apply when a targeted bank, credit union or other qualifying financial institution is federally insured or otherwise protected under federal law. The government must establish every required element of the charged offense beyond a reasonable doubt before a conviction can occur.

If convicted, Sawyer faces a maximum statutory sentence of 25 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Those penalties represent the maximum punishment authorized for the charge and do not determine what sentence would be imposed. Any sentence would be decided by a federal district court judge after considering the offense of conviction, applicable statutes, Sawyer’s criminal history, the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legally relevant factors.
