ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A Zuni man is facing a federal involuntary manslaughter charge after investigators alleged that he drove under the influence of alcohol before a rollover crash that killed a passenger and injured two children.
Caine Aric Chimoni, 28, an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Zuni, is accused of driving a pickup truck on June 7, 2026, when the vehicle rolled onto its side.
According to court documents, a woman riding as a passenger was found unresponsive following the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two children were also inside the vehicle and sustained injuries.
Chimoni was transported to a local hospital after the crash.
Federal authorities allege that he admitted to officers that he had been driving and may have been under the influence of alcohol.
Blood testing later showed a blood alcohol concentration of 162 mg/dL, a level above New Mexico’s legal limit for operating a motor vehicle.
One of the injured children required additional treatment and was transported to a regional hospital.
The federal case centers on the allegation that Chimoni’s operation of the vehicle while intoxicated resulted in the passenger’s death.
Chimoni is charged with involuntary manslaughter.
If convicted, he faces a maximum potential sentence of eight years in federal prison.
The release states that Chimoni will be subject to supervision by Federal Pretrial Services while the case proceeds. It also states that he remains in custody pending trial, creating an apparent procedural inconsistency in the underlying release regarding his immediate custody status.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, announced the case.
The Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office investigated the crash with assistance from the Zuni Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron O. Jordan is prosecuting the case.
The prosecution remains at the criminal complaint stage.
The allegations against Chimoni have not been proven in court, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
