Florida Man Arrested on Federal Charge After Allegedly Making Repeated Threatening Calls to NAACP

OCALA, Fla. — A Dunnellon man has been arrested and charged federally after investigators alleged that he made dozens of telephone calls to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, including threats directed at the organization’s leadership and former President Barack Obama.

Jeremiah James Schwier, 47, of Dunnellon, Florida, has been charged by criminal complaint with interstate transmission of a threat to injure.

If convicted, Schwier faces a maximum statutory penalty of five years in federal prison.

The case remains at the charging stage. The allegations contained in the criminal complaint have not been proven, and Schwier is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

According to the complaint, the NAACP received approximately 60 telephone calls between April and May 2026 from telephone numbers investigators later associated with Schwier.

Federal prosecutors said the calls contained sexual and inflammatory language.

The alleged communications escalated on May 20, 2026, when a caller whom NAACP personnel described as having a similar voice allegedly threatened to enter an NAACP office with what he called an “AK 57, or whatever you call those things.”

The complaint describes a continuing series of communications rather than a single alleged threat.

By August 2026, the NAACP had received an additional 14 similar telephone calls that allegedly included threats to kill former President Barack Obama and the NAACP President and Chief Executive Officer.

Federal investigators obtained Schwier’s cellphone records as part of the investigation.

According to prosecutors, those records showed calls from Schwier’s phone to the specific NAACP telephone number that had received the threatening communications.

Investigators also determined that the timing of numerous calls placed from Schwier’s cellphone was generally consistent with the times at which the NAACP received the alleged threats.

In this case, prosecutors allege the records helped connect Schwier to the telephone number targeted by the repeated communications.

Investigators arrested Schwier on August 26, 2026.

He has been detained pending resolution of the federal criminal case.

Schwier is charged with interstate transmission of a threat to injure. The government must prove the elements of that federal offense beyond a reasonable doubt.

U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe for the Middle District of Florida announced the arrest and federal charge.

The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

Assistant United States Attorney Angela M. Palacios is prosecuting the case.

The investigation reflects the federal government’s role when threatening communications cross jurisdictional boundaries or involve potential threats against individuals and organizations through interstate communications systems.

Repeated communications can also significantly expand an investigation because authorities are able to examine patterns involving telephone records, account ownership, timing, targeted recipients, and the progression of alleged statements over time.

Here, prosecutors contend that the pattern moved from dozens of inflammatory calls during April and May to explicit threats in May and additional alleged death threats by August.

Those claims will now be tested through the federal court process.

Schwier has been arrested and charged, not convicted. A criminal complaint represents an accusation supported by allegations presented to the court, and the government retains the burden of proving the charge beyond a reasonable doubt.
