FBI RENEWS CALL FOR INFORMATION FOUR YEARS AFTER DISAPPEARANCE OF AFGHAN AMERICAN BUSINESSMAN MAHMOOD SHAH HABIBI

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The FBI Washington Field Office is renewing its appeal for information in the disappearance of Mahmood Shah Habibi, an Afghan American businessman who vanished in Kabul, Afghanistan, on August 10, 2022.

The renewed appeal marks the fourth anniversary of Habibi’s disappearance and reflects an investigation that remains active four years after he was last seen.

At the time of his disappearance, Habibi worked as a consultant for Asia Consultancy Group, a Kabul-based telecommunications company. He had previously served as Afghanistan’s director of civil aviation.

According to the FBI, Habibi was taken from his vehicle near his home in Kabul along with his driver on August 10, 2022.

The FBI states that Habibi and his driver were allegedly detained by the Taliban’s General Directorate of Intelligence along with 29 other employees of Asia Consultancy Group.

All except Habibi and one other person were later released.

Habibi has not been heard from since his arrest, and the Taliban has not provided information about his condition or location.

Michael Burgwald, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Washington Field Office’s Counterterrorism Division, said the bureau remains committed to locating Habibi and returning him to his family.

Burgwald noted that Habibi’s daughter has not seen her father since before her first birthday and urged anyone with information to contact investigators.

The FBI’s current missing-person profile identifies Habibi as having been born on January 2, 1988, in Afghanistan. He is described as approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall and 190 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. The FBI states that he speaks English, Pashto, and Dari.

The investigation has continued through multiple public appeals.

In August 2024, the FBI again sought information from the public, stating that Habibi and his driver were believed to have been taken by Taliban military or security forces and that nearly all of the other detained Asia Consultancy Group employees had subsequently been released.

In August 2025, the FBI Washington Field Office released a missing-person poster as part of the continuing investigation.

That effort followed the U.S. Department of State’s announcement of a reward of up to $5 million through the Rewards for Justice Program for information leading to Habibi’s location, recovery, and return.

The FBI continues to classify Habibi as a missing person and maintains his case within its Kidnappings and Missing Persons program.

No public information released by the FBI establishes that Habibi has been released, transferred, or confirmed deceased.

His current condition and location remain unknown.

The FBI is asking anyone with information concerning Habibi’s disappearance or detention to contact the bureau through its tip system, a local FBI field office, or the nearest American Embassy or Consulate.

The FBI states that tips may remain confidential.

Four years after Habibi disappeared, the case remains unresolved, and federal investigators continue seeking information that could establish where he is and lead to his return.
