FBI BOSTON HONORS DANIEL E. LEVENSON WITH DIRECTOR’S COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARD FOR WORK AGAINST TARGETED VIOLENCE AND HATE-BASED THREATS

BOSTON — FBI Boston has honored Daniel E. Levenson with the Bureau’s Director’s Community Leadership Award in recognition of his work helping faith-based institutions and community organizations prepare for targeted violence, hate crimes, and threats to civil rights.

Special Agent in Charge Ted E. Docks presented the award to Levenson on September 23, 2026. FBI Boston said the recognition reflects Levenson’s long-standing partnership with the Bureau and his work strengthening security awareness, threat reporting, and community preparedness across Greater Boston.

Levenson serves as Senior Director of the Communal Security Initiative at Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston. He is also an associate member of FBI Boston’s Mass Bay Threat Assessment Team and the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals. Through those roles, he works with houses of worship and community organizations to help them understand emerging threats, improve security practices, and prepare for periods of heightened concern involving targeted violence or hate-motivated activity.

FBI Boston said the partnership has helped improve information sharing, encourage faster reporting of threats, support crime prevention, and strengthen connections between law enforcement and community organizations, particularly around major holidays and large-scale events.

The Director’s Community Leadership Award was established in 1990 to recognize individuals and organizations working to improve public safety through education and the prevention of crime and violence. Each year, one recipient is selected from each of the FBI’s 56 field offices.

Levenson’s work has also included recurring Interfaith Security Summits organized with FBI Boston and law-enforcement partners. Those events bring together participants from different faith communities for threat briefings, prevention training, and discussions focused on incident response and security planning. FBI Boston said Levenson has helped organizations make informed security decisions and remain connected to credible guidance when public-safety concerns arise.

Ted E. Docks, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Boston Division, said Levenson’s leadership has helped faith-based organizations become better prepared and more connected to trusted security resources. Docks also credited him with helping build public trust and strengthening cooperation between the FBI and the communities it serves.

The recognition also reflects nearly a decade of collaboration between Levenson and FBI Boston.

Levenson said he has worked with special agents, analysts, and community-relations personnel through several periods of heightened concern, including the 2019 arson attacks and the security environment that followed the October 7, 2023, attacks. He described FBI Boston as a continuing partner in efforts to address threats directed at Jewish and other faith-based communities.

That work extends beyond physical security planning. FBI Boston credited the partnership with strengthening information flow, encouraging rapid reporting of threats, improving crime prevention, and keeping community organizations connected to credible guidance when public-safety concerns emerge.

FBI Boston tied Levenson’s recognition directly to his partnership and dedication to preventing targeted violence and addressing hate crimes and threats to civil rights. The September 23 announcement presents the award as recognition of that broader body of work rather than a single investigation or event.

The Director’s Community Leadership Award recognizes individuals and organizations whose work makes a difference in their communities through education and the prevention of crime and violence. In Levenson’s case, FBI Boston pointed to years of collaboration, security education, interfaith outreach, threat-assessment participation, and efforts to strengthen communication between community leaders and federal law enforcement.

The result is a model centered on preparation before crisis, faster reporting when threats emerge, and stronger coordination when public-safety conditions change.
