SHREVEPORT, La. — The FBI has joined Louisiana state leaders and a multiagency coalition of federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to launch the GATOR Task Force, a new FBI-led operation focused on violent crime in the Greater Shreveport area.
GATOR stands for Gun Crime Abatement Targeted Offender Response.
The task force was created in response to community concerns involving violent gangs and drug trafficking and is structured around coordinated enforcement in the Greater Shreveport area.
The FBI announced the task force on September 28, 2026, alongside Louisiana’s governor, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Louisiana, and other participating law enforcement officials.
The GATOR Task Force currently includes personnel from the FBI, Louisiana State Police, Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office, Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana Division of Probation and Parole, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Drug Enforcement Administration, and Homeland Security Investigations.
The structure allows participating agencies to share financial resources, intelligence, and equipment while reducing duplication of effort against dangerous individuals and criminal enterprises.
That model is central to the FBI’s Safe Streets Violent Crime initiative, which was established in 1992 to address violent street gangs and drug-related violence through coordinated law enforcement partnerships.
FBI New Orleans Special Agent in Charge Jonathan Tapp said changes within FBI leadership during the previous 18 months had given Louisiana leadership greater operational flexibility in concentrating resources on violent crime and national security.
Tapp also said nearly 200 law enforcement officers statewide had been deputized, giving them federal arrest authority.
A single criminal network may be connected to firearms possession, narcotics distribution, robberies, shootings, witness intimidation, stolen vehicles, money laundering, and other crimes.
When those offenses are investigated independently, agencies can end up working different parts of the same organization without realizing the full extent of the connection.
A task-force structure is designed to reduce that fragmentation.
The FBI’s Safe Streets initiative applies that coordinated model by bringing participating agencies together to share resources, intelligence, and equipment while reducing duplication of effort.
The FBI remains the lead agency for GATOR.
GATOR places the participating agencies under an FBI-led framework focused on violent gangs, drug trafficking, and broader violent-crime enforcement across the Greater Shreveport area.
