ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI — Federal authorities have concluded a major violent crime enforcement operation in St. Louis, reporting 435 arrests, the seizure of 166 firearms, and the recovery of 81 kilograms of illegal drugs during a coordinated crackdown targeting armed offenders, firearms trafficking, and narcotics-related criminal activity.
The Department of Justice announced the results of Operation Show Me Justice on October 15, 2026. The initiative was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), working alongside the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri and numerous federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
In addition to the arrests and firearms seizures, participating agencies cleared 412 warrants, including the execution of 32 search warrants. Investigators also recovered six machine gun conversion devices and seized more than $1.25 million in currency associated with suspected illegal firearms and drug transactions.
The operation concentrated on individuals suspected of serious weapons-related offenses, including unlawful machine gun possession, possession of stolen firearms, illegal firearm purchases through intermediaries, and possession of firearms by convicted felons. Authorities also pursued individuals suspected of resisting arrest and participating in other violent criminal activities.
ATF personnel worked closely with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, U.S. Marshals Service, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), FBI, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The operation combined enforcement personnel, criminal investigators, intelligence analysts, and federal prosecutors to identify suspects and coordinate investigations across agency jurisdictions.
A significant component of the operation involved ballistic intelligence and crime-gun tracing. Investigators used the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), an ATF-administered system that examines markings left on cartridge casings when firearms are discharged.
These microscopic markings can provide investigative connections between shootings that occurred at different locations. By comparing cartridge casings recovered at crime scenes with evidence obtained from test-fired weapons, investigators can identify potential relationships between incidents that initially appear unrelated.
The system does not independently establish a person’s guilt. NIBIN produces investigative leads, and suspected matches may require examination by qualified firearms specialists before they can be confirmed and used as forensic evidence.
Crime-gun tracing provided another investigative resource. Through ATF’s National Tracing Center, authorities can examine a recovered firearm’s commercial history, beginning with its manufacture or importation and following its distribution to the first retail purchaser.
Although firearm tracing does not establish every subsequent transfer or identify who possessed a weapon during a particular offense, it can help investigators uncover suspicious purchasing patterns, identify potential straw purchasers, and trace sources of illegally diverted firearms.
Among the recovered weapons-related items were six machine gun conversion devices. These devices can modify certain semiautomatic firearms to discharge more than one round through a single function of the trigger. Under federal law, qualifying conversion devices are classified as machine guns, even when recovered separately from a firearm.
Their seizure is significant because illegally converted firearms can discharge ammunition at substantially higher rates than their original semiautomatic configurations, creating additional risks during shootings and confrontations with law enforcement.
The recovery of 81 kilograms of illegal drugs also reflects the operation’s attention to criminal activity extending beyond firearms offenses. The Justice Department did not identify the individual substances or provide a breakdown of the quantities recovered in its October 15 announcement.
The $1.25 million in seized currency was described by federal authorities as connected to suspected unlawful firearms and narcotics transactions. The announcement did not establish that every dollar represented proceeds from a proven criminal offense.
Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter credited cooperation among participating agencies for the enforcement results, emphasizing the removal of suspected violent offenders and illegal weapons from the community.
ATF Director Rob Cekada described the operation as an effort to interrupt criminal networks supplying firearms to individuals involved in violence. He highlighted the arrests and weapons seizures as central accomplishments of the initiative.
Gadyaces S. Serralta, Director of the U.S. Marshals Service, also recognized the coordinated enforcement effort and its significance for St. Louis residents, commuters, students, and visitors.
U.S. Attorney Thomas C. Albus for the Eastern District of Missouri acknowledged the federal personnel who traveled to St. Louis to support the operation, along with local officers and prosecutors responsible for continuing violent crime investigations after the initiative’s conclusion.
St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief Robert J. Tracy emphasized the importance of sustained investigative cooperation, particularly the ability to use local intelligence to identify suspects and develop cases that can withstand prosecution.
The operation reflects the broader investigative strategy behind ATF’s Crime Gun Intelligence Centers, which bring together law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, forensic specialists, and intelligence analysts to identify connections between firearms offenses.
According to ATF’s fiscal year 2025 data, NIBIN generated 193,269 investigative leads nationwide from ballistic evidence submitted through participating locations. These figures provide context for the technology’s national use but are separate from the enforcement results reported for Operation Show Me Justice.
The announced arrest total also requires an important legal distinction. An arrest does not establish criminal guilt, and the Justice Department did not provide a complete breakdown of charges, convictions, or final case dispositions for the 435 individuals taken into custody.
The longer-term effect on violent crime will depend on subsequent prosecutions, continued enforcement, and measurable changes in criminal activity. The October 15 announcement documented the operation’s enforcement results but did not provide sufficient data to determine its lasting effect on the city’s crime rate.
