NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE — A federal jury has convicted a Nashville man of operating a large-scale narcotics distribution network from a downtown apartment, where investigators recovered approximately 35 pounds of cocaine, four pounds of fentanyl, $350,000 in cash, and loaded firearms. The conviction follows a multiyear investigation that uncovered an organized trafficking operation supplying dangerous drugs throughout Middle Tennessee.
Brandon Ostein, 40, was found guilty of multiple federal drug trafficking and firearms offenses following a jury trial in the Middle District of Tennessee. U.S. Attorney Braden H. Boucek announced the verdict on October 16, 2026, which included convictions involving cocaine and fentanyl distribution, a drug trafficking conspiracy, unlawful firearm possession, and possession of firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking.
The jury convicted Ostein of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute at least 400 grams of fentanyl and five kilograms of cocaine, two counts involving cocaine distribution, and possession with intent to distribute the same threshold quantities of both substances. He was also convicted of possessing firearms in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
Evidence presented at trial established that Ostein maintained a trafficking operation from an apartment at 1200 Broadway, a downtown Nashville address situated within an area containing residential buildings, businesses, and commercial activity. The apartment served as a central storage and preparation location for narcotics, firearms, currency, and equipment used to package drugs for distribution.
The investigation began in April 2023 and incorporated controlled cocaine purchases, physical surveillance, and video recordings documenting drug transactions. Investigators determined that Ostein supplied cocaine to another individual who conducted smaller transactions while Ostein maintained oversight of the broader operation. Evidence also placed him at several of those sales.
On August 31, 2023, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at the Broadway apartment and uncovered quantities of narcotics consistent with substantial distribution activity. The recovered evidence included approximately 35 pounds of cocaine, four pounds of fentanyl, $350,000 in cash, two loaded firearms, a kilogram press, and packaging materials.
A kilogram press can be used to compress powdered narcotics into uniform blocks for transportation or distribution. Combined with packaging supplies and substantial drug inventories, the equipment provided evidence of drug preparation and supply operations rather than isolated personal possession.
Investigators also discovered a telescope positioned toward a nearby parking area. Trial evidence established that the device was used to monitor cocaine transactions occurring outside the apartment, allowing Ostein to observe activity from the building.
Building access records, surveillance footage, and personal belongings recovered from the apartment further established Ostein’s access to and control over the premises. These findings helped connect him directly to the stored drugs, firearms, and distribution equipment.
The amount of fentanyl recovered was particularly significant. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid capable of causing fatal respiratory depression, and concentrated quantities can support the production of substantial numbers of illicit doses. The seizure involved approximately four pounds of the substance, although the Justice Department’s October 16 announcement did not specify its laboratory-confirmed purity.
The cocaine seizure also represented a substantial trafficking quantity. Approximately 35 pounds is equivalent to nearly 16 kilograms, far exceeding the five-kilogram statutory threshold involved in the federal conviction.
Ostein’s criminal history became an additional component of the federal proceedings. In a separate phase of the trial, jurors determined that he had qualifying prior felony drug convictions, including Davidson County convictions involving possession of more than 300 grams of cocaine.
Those findings support an enhanced statutory penalty under federal drug trafficking law. The government is pursuing sentencing under provisions that impose substantially higher punishment for qualifying repeat drug offenders.
The investigation had previously resulted in a February 2024 federal indictment involving Ostein, also identified by the alias “Snake,” and another defendant, Anthony Gloss. The earlier indictment outlined allegations involving narcotics distribution and firearms recovered during searches of Nashville residences. Ostein’s October 2026 jury verdict establishes his guilt on the counts tried against him; the earlier charging document does not, by itself, establish the current procedural status of Gloss.
The federal prosecution also demonstrates the legal significance of firearms possessed in connection with narcotics distribution. Under 18 U.S.C. § 924(c), possession of a firearm in furtherance of a qualifying drug trafficking crime constitutes a separate federal offense. The government must establish a connection between the firearm and the underlying trafficking activity rather than relying solely on the presence of a weapon.
Ostein was separately convicted under the federal prohibition against firearm possession by convicted felons. His prior criminal convictions formed the legal basis for that charge.
U.S. Attorney Braden H. Boucek announced the jury’s decision following the trial. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, and Murfreesboro Police Department.
The investigation involved coordination among federal, state, and local agencies, combining controlled narcotics purchases with surveillance, financial evidence, search warrants, and records establishing the defendant’s connection to the trafficking location.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Juliet Aldridge and Dina A. Shabayek prosecuted the case.
Ostein is scheduled to be sentenced on January 21, 2027. Based on the jury’s findings and his qualifying prior convictions, he faces a mandatory minimum prison sentence of at least 30 years, with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
The precise sentence will be determined by the federal court after consideration of the applicable statutory requirements, U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, and relevant sentencing factors.
The federal jury’s verdict establishes Ostein’s criminal responsibility for the drug and firearm offenses. The prosecution demonstrated how a downtown residential apartment was used to store large quantities of narcotics, coordinate distribution, and maintain firearms and equipment connected to the trafficking operation.
The convictions now move the case into its sentencing phase, where Ostein faces the possibility of spending the remainder of his life in federal prison.
