NORFOLK, VIRGINIA — Alex Tyler Buenaga, 33, of Suffolk, was sentenced October 26, 2026, to life in federal prison for producing child sexual abuse material and coercing a minor to engage in illegal sexual activity.
A second defendant, Ryan Wade Johnston, 46, of Virginia Beach, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for receipt, possession, and transportation of child sexual abuse material.
According to court documents, beginning in October 2024, Buenaga, a former Newport News firefighter, sexually abused a three-month-old infant, recorded the abuse, and distributed the resulting material online. He recorded himself abusing the infant more than 90 times.
Court records also established that Buenaga invited others, including Johnston, to his residence to participate in the abuse and use methamphetamine. On at least one occasion, Buenaga recorded himself blowing methamphetamine smoke into the infant’s face.
On January 24, 2025, the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force responded to an emergency tip reporting that a Telegram user was producing and distributing child sexual abuse material. Agents identified Buenaga and went to his residence, where Buenaga and Johnston were arrested before additional abuse could occur.
U.S. District Judge Jamar K. Walker imposed the sentences.
The case was announced by Theophani K. Stamos, First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Ian Kaufmann, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Richmond Field Office.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph L. Kosky prosecuted the case.
The prosecution was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse by coordinating federal, state, and local law enforcement efforts to identify victims and prosecute offenders.
