BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS — A 37-year-old Lynn man has been convicted of attempted witness tampering following a five-day federal jury trial that examined his efforts to prevent a material witness from testifying in a separate firearms prosecution. Evidence presented at trial established that the defendant repeatedly contacted the witness while detained, urged the individual to avoid court proceedings, and eventually offered money in exchange for not testifying.
Charlie Vick was found guilty of one count of attempted witness tampering, according to an October 26, 2026, announcement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts. The jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict on a separate charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm, resulting in a hung jury on that count. A sentencing date for the witness tampering conviction has not yet been scheduled.
The case originated from an April 2023 federal indictment charging Vick with unlawfully possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. That prosecution followed an incident in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, where police allegedly discovered a firearm inside a vehicle Vick had been driving. His trial was scheduled for January 2024 in federal court in Worcester, and prosecutors intended to call a material witness identified in court proceedings as Person 1.
While awaiting trial at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility, Vick repeatedly communicated with Person 1 in an effort to discourage testimony. The messages became central evidence in the government’s subsequent witness tampering prosecution, which resulted in additional charges being brought against Vick in March 2024.
On November 12, 2023, Vick sent messages asking whether Person 1 intended to cooperate with federal prosecutors and help secure a conviction against him. Two days later, he discussed photographs that investigators believed could connect him to firearms, including images showing Vick holding guns. He urged the witness not to provide testimony that could help prosecutors introduce that evidence during the upcoming trial.
In additional communications, Vick instructed Person 1 to stay somewhere else during the trial and repeatedly requested that the witness not testify against him. The messages reflected his concern that the witness’s testimony could strengthen the government’s firearms case.
The evidence also established that on December 28, 2023, Vick offered to compensate the witness for staying away from court. In one message, he wrote, “If I have to pay you to stay away lmk,” before urging the witness to pack a bag and spend time elsewhere during the proceedings.
Federal prosecutors presented the communications as evidence of a deliberate attempt to interfere with the judicial process by preventing material testimony. The jury’s guilty verdict establishes that Vick committed attempted witness tampering, independent of the unresolved firearms charge.
Witness tampering is a federal offense because efforts to intimidate, corruptly persuade, or otherwise improperly influence witnesses can interfere with the administration of justice. The offense does not require prosecutors to establish that the underlying criminal charge resulted in a conviction. An unlawful attempt to prevent testimony can be prosecuted separately from the original case.
Vick faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, up to three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000 for the witness tampering conviction. His actual sentence will be determined by a federal district judge after consideration of the applicable sentencing guidelines and statutory factors.
The investigation involved the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Boston Field Division, with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police. U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley and ATF Special Agent in Charge Thomas A. Greco announced the conviction. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Brendan O’Shea and Zachary Stendig of the Worcester Branch Office are prosecuting the case.
