The lasting influence we have on others, the values we pass from one generation to the next, and how our choices, compassion, and faith can shape lives in ways we may never fully realize
We often think of setting an example as something reserved for parents, teachers, religious leaders, or those entrusted with positions of authority. Yet every one of us has the ability to influence another person’s life, sometimes without realizing that anyone is paying attention. Our children observe how we respond to difficulties, our friends notice how we treat others, and even strangers can be affected by the smallest gestures of kindness or consideration. The example we establish is not confined to the advice we give or the beliefs we profess. It is reflected in the decisions we make, the responsibilities we fulfill, and the character we demonstrate when circumstances challenge our patience, compassion, and integrity.
There is a profound responsibility in recognizing that someone may be learning from our behavior without ever telling us. A child might remember how a parent handled disappointment long after the circumstances themselves have been forgotten. A young adult may carry forward the lessons learned from someone who offered guidance during a difficult time. An individual struggling with personal hardship might find encouragement in witnessing another person’s determination to remain compassionate despite their own challenges. These influences are not always immediate or visible, yet they can shape how people understand responsibility, relationships, and the treatment of others throughout their lives. We may never know whose outlook was strengthened because of something we did, or whose trust was damaged because of something we failed to consider.
Jesus reminded His followers that their actions should reflect the goodness of God and encourage others to follow what is righteous.
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16 (KJV)
This passage teaches us that faith is intended to be demonstrated through the way we live. Good works are not meant to become performances designed to attract admiration or establish superiority over others. Their purpose is to reflect the values Christ taught and reveal the compassion, humility, and integrity that should guide our actions. When we help someone without expecting recognition, fulfill a promise despite inconvenience, or treat another person with dignity when doing so offers no personal advantage, we demonstrate principles that others can recognize through our actions. These actions may appear ordinary, but they become meaningful when they reveal a commitment to something greater than our own interests.
One of the most important lessons we can teach through our example is the willingness to accept responsibility when we are wrong. None of us moves through life without making mistakes, speaking without sufficient consideration, or occasionally allowing frustration to influence our judgment. What others learn from those moments depends greatly on how we respond afterward. A parent who acknowledges an error teaches a child that accountability is not weakness. A person who offers a sincere apology demonstrates that respect is more important than preserving personal pride. Someone who takes responsibility for a poor decision shows that integrity includes the courage to confront our own shortcomings. These experiences can provide lessons far more enduring than instructions delivered without the willingness to practice them.
The Apostle Paul understood that a faithful example is not determined by age, public recognition, or social standing. It is established through consistent behavior and the principles demonstrated in everyday life.
“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” — 1 Timothy 4:12 (KJV)
Paul’s instruction to Timothy reminds us that anyone can demonstrate character worthy of respect. Young people can teach older generations through their compassion, determination, and willingness to serve. Older individuals can offer wisdom developed through experience, sacrifice, and perseverance. Neither age nor position guarantees that a person will become a positive influence. What matters is whether our behavior reflects the values we claim to uphold. Our example becomes particularly meaningful when others recognize consistency between what we believe, what we say, and what we actually do.
There is also a responsibility to recognize that our influence extends beyond the people closest to us. A workplace can become more respectful because one individual refuses to participate in humiliation or unfair treatment. A community can become more compassionate when someone takes the time to help a neighbor rather than looking away. A family can begin repairing damaged relationships when one person demonstrates the willingness to listen, forgive, and approach disagreements with understanding. We cannot determine how others will respond to our actions, but we can choose whether our behavior contributes to an atmosphere of respect or one of unnecessary hostility. The example we provide becomes part of the environment in which others must live, work, and grow.
Scripture also calls us to demonstrate integrity through our good works, ensuring that our actions reflect the principles we profess.
“In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,” — Titus 2:7 (KJV)
This instruction emphasizes the importance of consistency and sincerity. A positive example cannot be established through occasional acts of generosity while disregarding our responsibilities in other areas of life. It requires attention to how we treat people who disagree with us, how we respond when facing disappointment, and whether we remain trustworthy when keeping our word becomes difficult. We should never expect perfection from ourselves or others, but we can strive to become individuals whose actions demonstrate reliability, fairness, and genuine concern for those around us. Character is formed through repeated choices, and those choices gradually become the example others associate with our lives.
As we reflect on this responsibility, we should also remember that being an example does not require possessing all the answers or having a life free from hardship. Some of the most meaningful examples come from people who have experienced tremendous difficulties yet continue to show kindness, gratitude, and faith. Their influence is not found in the absence of struggle, but in the determination to face it without abandoning their principles. We should also be careful not to place impossible expectations upon those who look to us for guidance. Teaching others that mistakes can be acknowledged, forgiveness can be sought, and personal growth remains possible is itself an important example of Christian humility.
“For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.” — Proverbs 24:16 (KJV)
The truth is that our lives communicate far more than we sometimes realize. Long after particular conversations have faded from memory, people may still remember whether we treated them fairly, whether we offered help when they needed it, and whether our actions reflected the beliefs we expressed. We may never know the full influence of our actions, but that uncertainty should encourage greater care rather than indifference. Every day presents opportunities to demonstrate that honesty, compassion, patience, and faith are not simply ideals to be discussed, but responsibilities to be lived.
May we remember that someone, somewhere, may be learning the true meaning of kindness, courage, and faith by observing how we choose to live. Let us strive to leave an example that strengthens rather than discourages, encourages rather than diminishes, and reflects the love of God through the ordinary decisions that shape our lives.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We come before You with humble hearts, asking for Your guidance as we consider the influence our lives may have upon others. Help us recognize the responsibility we carry through our words, our actions, and the decisions we make each day. Teach us to demonstrate compassion, integrity, and understanding, especially when circumstances test our patience and faith.
Lord, give us the wisdom to lead through our example rather than expecting others to follow principles we are unwilling to practice ourselves. When we make mistakes, grant us the humility to acknowledge them and the courage to make things right. Help us encourage those who are struggling, support those who need guidance, and treat every person with the dignity and respect they deserve.
Father, may the way we live reflect the teachings of Jesus Christ, and may the examples we leave behind inspire others toward kindness, honesty, and faith. Remind us that even the smallest act of goodness can have meaning beyond what we are able to see.
Guide our hearts, strengthen our character, and help us become a positive influence in the lives of those we encounter.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
