NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA — Erlin Jovany Gamez Maldonado, 29, a Honduran national unlawfully present in the United States, pleaded guilty on October 22, 2026, to possessing a firearm in violation of the Federal Gun Control Act. U.S. Attorney David I. Courcelle announced the guilty plea on October 30, 2026, in the Eastern District of Louisiana.
According to federal court documents, Gamez Maldonado possessed an Anderson Manufacturing AM-15 multi-caliber rifle on or about May 4, 2026, within the Eastern District of Louisiana. His guilty plea concerns Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g)(5)(A), which prohibits firearm possession by individuals unlawfully present in the country, with penalties prescribed under Section 924(a)(8).
Gamez Maldonado faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and three years of supervised release. He must also pay a mandatory $100 special assessment. The court will determine his sentence under applicable federal law.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO). Assistant United States Attorney Mary Katherine Kaufman of the General Narcotics Unit is prosecuting the case.
The prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative coordinating federal law enforcement efforts involving immigration violations, transnational criminal organizations, and violent crime. The case reflects the enforcement of federal firearm restrictions against individuals prohibited from possessing weapons under United States law.
