Cybersecurity Report: The 2024 Report on the Cybersecurity Posture of the United States is a comprehensive assessment of the nation’s cybersecurity readiness. It evaluates the effectiveness of national cyber policy and strategy, and the status of the implementation of these policies by Federal departments and agencies. The report highlights major findings and underscores the widening cyber inequity and the profound impact of emerging technologies.
New Threats: In the realm of new threats, a new ransomware operation named ‘Fog’ has emerged. Launched in early May 2024, ‘Fog’ uses compromised VPN credentials to breach the networks of educational organizations in the U.S. In another development, researchers at Texas A&M University and Ho Technical University have developed a new approach to produce adversarial ransomware samples, termed evolution generative adversarial network (EGAN). This method generates ransomware that can successfully evade numerous commercial AI-powered anti-virus solutions and malware detection methods.
New Breaches: Data breach litigation is becoming the new cyber battleground. Globally, there were twice the number of data breach victims in 2023 as compared to 2022. In 2023 alone, breach-related class actions and government enforcement suits resulted in over $50 billion in settlement expenditures. Carmaker Toyota and real estate firm Robinsons Land have confirmed reports of data breaches in their companies and are now under evaluation by the National Privacy Commission (NPC). The Toronto Public Library has also reported a data breach, with sensitive, personal information relating to their employees, as well as library customers and volunteers, stolen from their systems during a highly sophisticated ransomware attack.
New Ransomware Attacks: In terms of new ransomware attacks, the ‘Fog’ operation has been particularly active. Several medical services in London have also been slowed down due to a ransomware attack by Quilin, a Russian hacker group.
This concludes our cybersecurity report for today. Stay tuned for more updates and remember, stay safe online!
