FOUR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA LAW ENFORCEMENT LEADERS GRADUATE FROM FBI NATIONAL ACADEMY

SACRAMENTO, California — Four law enforcement professionals from agencies across Northern California have graduated from the FBI National Academy’s 298th session, completing one of the most respected professional development programs in law enforcement.

The FBI Sacramento Field Office announced that the graduates completed the intensive 10-week training program at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, joining an international network of law enforcement leaders who have successfully completed the academy’s rigorous academic and leadership curriculum.

Acting Special Agent in Charge Brian Tosh of the FBI Sacramento Field Office congratulated the graduates, noting that the program is designed to strengthen leadership, enhance professional development, and prepare law enforcement agencies to address emerging threats facing communities across the country.

The graduates representing the FBI Sacramento Field Office’s 34-county area of responsibility include:

• Chief Steven Stanfield, Merced Police Department
• Assistant Chief Brian Fry, San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office
• Lieutenant Andrew Smith, Stockton Police Department
• Lieutenant David Shaw, Turlock Police Department

The FBI National Academy combines graduate-level coursework, leadership training, physical fitness requirements, and collaborative learning opportunities. Academic instruction is accredited through the University of Virginia and focuses on topics such as leadership, criminal justice, behavioral science, communications, management, and emerging public safety challenges.

Founded in 1935, the FBI National Academy has trained tens of thousands of law enforcement professionals from across the United States and around the world. Participants include representatives from local, state, federal, military, tribal, and international law enforcement agencies.

The academy is widely regarded as one of the premier leadership development programs in policing. Participants are selected through a competitive nomination process and are typically experienced law enforcement professionals with significant supervisory and command-level responsibilities.

According to the FBI, National Academy graduates average approximately 21 years of law enforcement experience. Many return to their agencies to serve in executive leadership positions, bringing back knowledge, professional networks, and best practices developed through the program.

Over the decades, the academy has evolved alongside changing public safety challenges, incorporating instruction related to leadership, cybersecurity, intelligence-sharing, violent crime, crisis response, emerging technologies, and community engagement. Despite these changes, the academy’s core mission remains focused on improving cooperation, professionalism, and the administration of justice throughout the law enforcement community.

The four graduates now join a global network of FBI National Academy alumni who continue to collaborate, share expertise, and support law enforcement initiatives long after completing the program.
