Today’s extreme weather report highlights critical weather events across the United States, including Hurricane Helene impacting Florida and Tropical Storm Isaac in the Atlantic. Take note of the severe weather warnings and advisories for your safety.
Midwest Region:
- Tornado Risk:
A moderate risk of tornado activity remains across parts of Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa. Tornadoes could range from EF1 to EF3, especially in the afternoon. Have an emergency plan in place and stay alert for local warnings. - Thunderstorms:
Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan face strong thunderstorms with large hail (up to 2 inches) and damaging winds of up to 70 mph. Flash flooding is possible in low-lying areas. - Flash Flooding:
Heavy rain continues to affect Missouri and Illinois, with additional rainfall of 2-4 inches expected. Rivers and creeks may flood, so avoid travel through flooded roads.
Southeast Region:
- Heat Advisories:
The Gulf Coast states face dangerous heat conditions, particularly in Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. Heat indices could reach 105°F-110°F, so stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities.
Hurricane Warnings:
- Hurricane Helene (Atlantic Coast):
Hurricane Helene is now a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph, threatening Florida’s Big Bend region. Storm surges of up to 20 feet are possible, with life-threatening flooding and wind damage across Tampa and surrounding areas. Rainfall totals could reach 12 inches in some areas. Hurricane-force winds extend 60 miles from the storm’s center. - Tropical Storm Isaac (Central Atlantic):
Tropical Storm Isaac is currently 1,285 miles west of the Azores and moving east at 10 mph. Isaac has sustained winds of 50 mph and is forecast to reach hurricane strength by Friday or Saturday. While no impact is expected on the U.S., Bermuda and the Azores may experience dangerous surf and rip currents.
Northeast Region:
- Thunderstorms and Flooding:
Expect heavy rain and thunderstorms in New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, with flash flood watches in effect. Rainfall of 1-3 inches could cause localized flooding, and wind gusts may reach 60 mph. - Tornado Watch:
A tornado watch is in place for parts of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Tornadoes could form in isolated storm cells, so take shelter if needed.
Western U.S.:
- Wildfire Risks:
Washington, Oregon, and Northern California remain under red flag warnings due to gusty winds and dry conditions. Wildfires could spread rapidly, so avoid any activities that could spark a fire. - Excessive Heat:
Southern California and parts of the Desert Southwest are under excessive heat warnings, with highs of up to 105°F. Stay indoors during peak heat hours and stay hydrated. - Earthquake Activity:
A minor 3.8 magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Northern California early today. No major damage was reported, but aftershocks remain possible.
Safety Recommendations:
- Prepare for storm surges and evacuate if you live in the affected areas of Florida.
- In regions under tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings, have an emergency kit ready.
- Stay hydrated and limit outdoor exposure in regions under heat advisories.
- Follow local advisories in wildfire-prone areas and be prepared to evacuate.
Stay safe, stay informed, and continue monitoring local weather services for real-time updates.

This was a big one. My friend has a house on the beach near Sanibel Is… the eye was over 100 mi out in the gulf and his house was destroyed. Western NC got dumped on, widespread flooding and power outages.
Yes, it definitely was a big one and truly devastating. I’m so sorry to hear about your friend’s house—it’s heartbreaking. It sounds like the effects were widespread, especially with the flooding and power outages in Western NC. I hope everyone stays safe, and that recovery efforts move quickly. These storms remind us of the sheer power of nature, for sure. 🙏
Praying for the safety of everyone in the hurricane-affected areas. May they find shelter, comfort, and protection during this challenging time. Let’s come together in hope and support for all those impacted.
Thank you very much, Willie! 🙏
