Law enforcement agencies in Sweden and Finland successfully shut down the Sipulitie criminal marketplace, an online platform that facilitated the sale of narcotics and other illegal goods throughout Scandinavia. This operation, which led to the seizure of the platform’s servers, is part of a broader effort by both nations to combat dark web crime in the region.
Sipulitie, launched on the Tor network in February 2023, initially focused on Finland but expanded to cover other Scandinavian countries. The site followed in the footsteps of a predecessor, which was created in April 2019 and was similarly shut down in December 2020 by Finnish Customs, in collaboration with Polish authorities.
Finnish investigators were able to uncover the identities of the administrator behind both iterations of Sipulitie, along with several key players who served as moderators and customer service agents for the marketplace. The investigation also revealed the identities of many buyers and sellers operating on the platform.
In a statement, Finnish Customs noted that the takedown was a joint effort, involving Swedish law enforcement, Europol, and multiple police units in Finland. While authorities have not confirmed if arrests were made, they did confirm that the network servers hosting the marketplace were seized, and the Tor-based website was permanently shut down.
According to Finnish Customs, the administrator of Sipulitie claimed the marketplace generated over €1.3 million (approximately $1.4 million) during its operational run. The platform catered to users in both Finnish and English, facilitating a variety of illegal transactions across Scandinavia.
Hannu Sinkkonen, Director of Enforcement at Finnish Customs, emphasized the agency’s ongoing commitment to fighting dark web crime. “We at Finnish Customs have effectively intervened in numerous criminal activities on the dark web through various methods,” Sinkkonen said.
Bitdefender, a cybersecurity firm, played a pivotal role in assisting Finnish Customs with intelligence during the investigation. Alex Cosoi, Bitdefender’s Chief Security Strategist, highlighted that their team had also supported the takedown of Sipulitie’s predecessor in 2020. Cosoi remarked, “This operation sends a clear message to those who think the dark web guarantees anonymity. When targeted by international cooperation, there is nowhere to hide.”
The Sipulitie takedown comes on the heels of other successful operations, such as the 2023 dismantling of the PIILOPUOTI dark web marketplace. Finnish authorities, working with Europol, successfully brought down the platform, which allowed users to smuggle drugs and paraphernalia into Finland.
With continued international collaboration and advanced investigative methods, authorities are delivering a strong blow to organized crime on the dark web, reminding criminals that even in the digital underworld, justice can find them.
