I am what you’re not, a voice unrestrained,
Where your silence lingers, my truth is proclaimed.
I walk in the light, while you skulk in the shade,
Your kingdom of whispers, a throne that will fade.
I am the courage you’ll never possess,
The strength to rise under crushing duress.
You hide in your masks, your layers of lies,
I stand in the open, with unflinching eyes.
You twist and you scheme, but I build and create,
While you sow division, I challenge the fate.
I rise from the ashes of battles you’d flee,
Where you see a wall, I see victory.
I am what you’re not: a fire alive,
A beacon of hope, the will to survive.
While you cling to shadows, I step into light,
For truth is my armor, my sword in the fight.
I choose the hard road, the path that ascends,
While you take shortcuts that crumble and bend.
You worship the hollow, the fleeting, the fake,
I root in the real, in each step that I take.
I’m the storm you deny, the wave you can’t hold,
A soul forged in fire, unyielding and bold.
You fear what I am, for it mirrors your lack,
Each step that I take, you wish to retract.
I am the faith you abandoned in fear,
The whisper of God you refuse to hear.
While you chase the devil, his promises bare,
I walk with my Savior, His love everywhere.
You live for applause, for the hollow acclaim,
While I stand fulfilled without chasing the game.
For power and fame will wither and rot,
But I will endure—I am what you’re not.
I don’t need your approval, your nod or your smile,
I’ve walked through the fire, mile after mile.
Your chains won’t fit, your words won’t bind,
I’m free in my soul, unshaken in mind.
So stay in your circle of envy and spite,
While I chart my course by the stars in the night.
You’ll never contain me, no matter your plot,
For I am what you fear—I am what you’re not.

“I choose the hard road, the path that ascends,
While you take shortcuts that crumble and bend.”
You have a gift with words, John. I enjoyed this. The words above reminded me of “Christian” from “The Pilgrim’s Progress (from This World, to That Which Is to Come), a 1678 Christian allegory written by John Bunyan. I’m sure you’ve heard of it. If not, Christian’s journey to the Celestial City is the plot of the story. The story is full of characters with names that fit their personalities.
Your last two lines also remind me of characters in the story who tried to stop Christian:
“You’ll never contain me, no matter your plot,
For I am what you fear—I am what you’re not.”
Thank you for sharing, John. It is very nicely done!
Thank you very much, Chris! I really appreciate your thoughtful comment and reflections. The connection to The Pilgrim’s Progress is a powerful one, and I love how you tied it to the themes in the poem. Your insight adds such depth to the discussion. It’s always fascinating when words remind someone of something meaningful to them, even if that wasn’t the original intention. That’s the beauty of writing—it speaks differently to each person. I really appreciate you sharing your perspective, and I’m glad you enjoyed the piece! Thanks again! I hope you have a great night. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for your kind comment. One of the first things I thought about when I read your poem was the word you used: depth.
I can see this poem speaking to many people in many different ways as you mentioned. I knew that what I saw in it might not be seen by others and vice-versa.
Thanks again and I hope you have a great night as well!
You are a warrior and a poet, a sage like some are not. Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much! I appreciate your kind words. I hope you have a great night. 😎
Love it, John! It’s like a warrior prayer!
Thank you very much, Sheila! Always appreciated. 😎
Very nice
Thank you! 😎
