A ransomware attack has struck New York Blood Center Enterprises (NYBC), one of the largest independent blood centers in the United States, disrupting vital operations, forcing blood drive cancellations, and causing significant delays in blood processing. The attack impacts more than 75 million people nationwide, raising concerns over potential shortages in critical healthcare services.
A Disruptive Cyberattack on Lifesaving Operations
NYBC reported that its IT team first detected suspicious activity on Sunday, later confirmed by third-party cybersecurity experts to be a ransomware incident. The attack has crippled essential systems used to manage blood collection, processing, and distribution, forcing the organization to adopt manual workarounds.
Law enforcement agencies have been notified and are actively involved in the response, while cybersecurity specialists work to contain the threat and restore system functionality.
“We understand the critical nature of our services, and the health of our communities remains our top priority. We remain in direct communication with our hospital partners and are implementing workarounds to help restore services and fulfill orders,” NYBC stated.
Uncertain Recovery Timeline, But Donations Still Needed
NYBC acknowledged that there is no clear timetable for full system restoration. However, despite the attack, the organization is still accepting blood donations, though processing times at donation centers and blood drives may be longer than usual.
“We are in direct communication with our donor centers, sponsor organizations, and donors to share updates as appropriate,” NYBC added.
While some blood drives may need to be rescheduled, the center warned that a major push for additional blood donations may be necessary in the coming weeks once the immediate crisis has passed.
Who’s Behind the Attack?
So far, no ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack, leaving questions about the motive and potential data theft unanswered. Given the recent rise in cyberattacks on healthcare and blood services, this incident aligns with a disturbing global trend where hackers target life-critical institutions for financial gain or geopolitical leverage.
A Widening Crisis for Blood Centers Worldwide
This latest attack is part of a growing pattern of cyberattacks crippling blood services and pathology labs across multiple countries, including:
- OneBlood Ransomware Attack (USA, 2024): OneBlood, a nonprofit blood donation group serving 250 hospitals across the southeastern U.S., suffered a ransomware attack that forced hospitals to activate emergency blood shortage protocols. The organization was forced to manually label blood products, significantly delaying distribution. A data breach later exposed hundreds of names and Social Security numbers.
- Synnovis Cyberattack (UK, 2023): One of the UK’s largest pathology services providers was shut down by a ransomware attack, severely disrupting hospital and clinic operations.
- South Africa’s National Lab Service Attack (2023): A ransomware attack crippled South Africa’s ability to process blood test results, exacerbating an already strained healthcare system.
The Scale of NYBC’s Reach
NYBC Enterprises is responsible for collecting over 4,000 units of blood products daily and supplies more than 400 hospitals across multiple states. Its network includes multiple blood centers, such as:
- New York Blood Center
- Community Blood Center
- Blood Bank of Delmarva
- Innovative Blood Resources
- Memorial Blood Centers
- Nebraska Community Blood Bank
- Rhode Island Blood Center
- Connecticut Blood Center
With such an expansive reach, any prolonged disruption could lead to severe blood shortages, affecting patient care, emergency surgeries, and transfusions for trauma victims.
What’s Next?
NYBC has thanked hospitals, blood centers, and associations assisting in their crisis response. Meanwhile, the FBI and cybersecurity experts continue investigating the breach, searching for those responsible and working on recovery strategies.
