Collins, N.Y. – The Collins Correctional Facility in the Town of Collins has been placed on lockdown for several hours due to an active situation developing within the prison walls.
Sources indicate that inmates have taken control of two dormitory units inside the facility as of Tuesday night. While officials confirm that all staff and incarcerated individuals are accounted for, the situation remains fluid, and authorities are actively responding to restore order.
Kenny Gold, president of the Western Region of the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA), has confirmed that the state’s elite Corrections Emergency Response Team (CERT) is on-site managing the crisis. Additionally, the Commissioner of the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) has personally arrived at the scene to oversee operations.
Reports indicate that three correctional officers have sustained minor injuries during the unfolding events. However, there have been no confirmed reports of severe injuries or fatalities.
New York State Police have acknowledged the ongoing situation but emphasize that DOCCS remains the lead agency in handling the matter. They continue to monitor developments closely and stand ready to provide further assistance as needed.
In an official statement, the Department of Corrections issued the following update:
“The Collins Correctional Facility has been locked down for the safety and security of the staff and incarcerated population. All staff and incarcerated individuals are accounted for and safe. We have no further comment at this time. We expect to have more information later in the day.”
At this moment, authorities have not disclosed further details regarding what led to the inmates’ control of the dorms, nor have they specified the measures being taken to de-escalate the situation.
