$20 Million Bounty Offered as Criminals Target Customer Data with Inside Help

Coinbase, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, has confirmed a targeted data theft and extortion attempt that compromised sensitive customer information and triggered an aggressive $20 million bounty for leads.
In a regulatory 8-K filing with the SEC and an urgent blog post on May 16, Coinbase revealed the breach began with a cash-driven social engineering scheme aimed at their overseas customer support agents. The company says that only “less than 1%” of its 9.7 million monthly users were affected — though the scope of the stolen data suggests otherwise.
THE ATTACK
The unnamed extortion group emailed Coinbase on May 11, demanding $20 million to prevent the release of stolen internal data. The company declined.
“We said no,” Coinbase stated bluntly, refusing to comply with the digital shakedown. Instead, the firm is offering $20 million of its own to anyone who can help unmask and convict the actors behind the heist.
According to the company, the threat actors bribed support agents in India, who used privileged access to pull names, addresses, phone numbers, masked social security and banking info, government IDs, transaction logs, and partial account metadata. What wasn’t stolen: logins, passwords, two-factor codes, or direct access to wallets.
“This wasn’t a technical exploit,” one executive stated. “It was an old-school infiltration with new-school intent.”
The agents involved have since been terminated, and Coinbase claims to be working closely with international law enforcement to track and prosecute those behind the plot.
PHISHING PRIMED AND READY
The likely goal wasn’t just to extort Coinbase — it was to phish its customers at scale.
With a partial user list and real internal data, the attackers can convincingly impersonate Coinbase through follow-up scams designed to steal actual crypto. Coinbase warned its customers:
“Expect imposters… Coinbase will never ask for your password, 2FA codes, or for you to transfer assets to any new address.”
The company pledged to reimburse any verified victims who are deceived by these scams.
THE REAL COST
Beyond reputational damage, Coinbase disclosed a potential remediation bill between $180 million and $400 million, a staggering blow even for a firm with a $67 billion market cap.
And the breach comes at a pivotal time — Coinbase was just added to the S&P 500 index and is seen as a bellwether of crypto legitimacy in the financial mainstream.
But this incident reveals the lingering cracks in the system: even billion-dollar crypto companies remain vulnerable to basic insider bribery — and that may be the softest underbelly of all.
