Incident Date: March 22, 2025
Target: New York University (NYU)
Data Exposed: Full names, GPAs, addresses, emails, test scores, citizenship status, and financial aid info
Method: Website defacement via DNS hijack and data exfiltration
Threat Actor: Group identifying as “Computer Niggy Exploitation”
A Quiet Saturday Turns Into a Data Nightmare
On March 22nd, New York University students and faculty loaded the school’s homepage expecting business as usual. What they found instead was a full-scale defacement: the official NYU site had been hijacked and replaced with data dumps, racial test score charts, and direct access to massive databases of applicant information — some dating back over three decades.
The hacker, who claims affiliation with the group “Computer Niggy Exploitation,” exposed the personal information of over 1 million students, including:
- Full names
- Email addresses
- Physical addresses
- Phone numbers
- GPAs
- Standardized test scores
- Citizenship and visa statuses
- Financial aid history
The Alleged Motive: Targeting Affirmative Action
According to the hacker’s post, the breach was politically motivated, aimed at challenging university compliance with the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling against affirmative action in college admissions. The attacker claimed the data would “prove” that NYU continues to admit students based on racial preference — particularly Black and Latino students — in violation of the decision.
But that justification is hollow in the face of the damage done. More than a million people’s privacy was shattered — regardless of race, background, or political narrative.
Redaction Failure = Real-World Damage
Cybersecurity expert Zack Ganot of DataBreach.com reported that the hacker’s claims of redaction were false or grossly incompetent. The datasets were “not properly scrubbed,” exposing critical personal identifiers across every file.
“The collateral damage is real — and the privacy consequences for over a million people won’t just disappear after the headlines fade,”
— Zack Ganot, DataBreach.com
In fact, Ganot made the searchable data available on his platform, allowing students to check if they were impacted — an attempt to bring transparency to the breach, even as damage continued to unfold.
Scope of the Breach
- Affected over 3 million applications from as far back as 1989
- Included data for both domestic and international students
- Some records included Social Security numbers, visa status, or financial dependency data
- NYU’s internal web traffic was fully hijacked for approximately three hours before being restored
While NYU has not confirmed the full scope, insiders say the magnitude rivals federal-level data leaks and may fall under multiple jurisdictional privacy laws, including FERPA, GDPR (for EU applicants), and state-level data protection statutes.
NYU Response: Limited Transparency, Legal Protocol
NYU spokesperson John Beckman confirmed the breach and claimed the university responded swiftly, working with cybersecurity specialists to regain control of the domain routing and notify law enforcement.
“The University responded immediately… and redirected traffic back to its real website in less than three hours.”
— John Beckman, NYU
However, no official update has clarified how the attacker accessed NYU’s DNS systems, or whether student passwords and credentials were also compromised.
As of now:
- No confirmation on how many students are being notified
- No timeline on whether identity monitoring services will be offered
- No statement on whether the attacker has been identified
Repeat Offenders: The Hacker Group Behind the Breach
The attacker(s) claimed responsibility under the name “Computer Niggy Exploitation,” a group that previously targeted the University of Minnesota, leaking over 7 million Social Security numbers and student records in a similar stunt.
Both attacks:
- Weaponized racial and political narratives
- Defaced institutional websites
- Dumped mass personal data with limited or faulty redactions
- Justified the attacks as “whistleblowing” while causing severe collateral damage
This group doesn’t appear to be financially motivated — their attacks are designed for chaos, controversy, and digital disruption, leveraging racial tension as a smokescreen.
The Bigger Picture: Universities Under Fire
This breach reflects a disturbing trend in higher education cyberattacks:
- DNS hijacks bypass traditional firewall defenses
- Decades of legacy data remain unencrypted or poorly segmented
- Political tensions are being weaponized for digital activism with real-world casualties
NYU is far from alone. Universities are increasingly becoming soft targets due to:
- Massive centralized data
- Weak identity management
- Delayed or fragmented response strategies
Final Thought
This wasn’t just a defacement. This was a weaponized breach of institutional trust, carried out with surgical precision and wrapped in social rhetoric to muddy the waters. Whether or not the attacker believes in their cause is irrelevant — they exposed children, teens, and young adults to serious risk.
If a hacker wants to expose truth, they can leak documents — not personally identifiable data of over a million innocent people.
No cause justifies this recklessness.
