What Are Com Networks?
Referred to by investigators as “The Com,” these networks are loosely formed online collectives of adolescent males, primarily English-speaking, with concentrations in the UK, USA, and other English-speaking nations.
What they share:
- A desire to cause psychological, emotional, and physical harm to others, especially peers and younger children
- Sadistic, misogynistic, and often sexually violent content passed around like social currency
- A social hierarchy based not on empathy, but on the extent of harm and depravity they can generate or coerce others into
According to NCA Director General Graeme Biggar, these networks encourage “collaboration or competition to cause harm across a broad spectrum of criminality — including cybercrime, fraud, extremism, serious violence, and child sexual abuse.”
Surge in Activity — And Victims
From 2022 to 2024, the number of known incidents tied to Com networks increased six-fold. These aren’t vague threats — some cases have crossed into horrific territory, with girls as young as 11 years old coerced into self-harm, sexually abusing themselves, family members, or even pets under psychological manipulation and blackmail.
In one of the most shocking examples, Richard Ehiemere, a now-21-year-old from East London and a confirmed member of a Com network, was convicted of fraud and child exploitation after targeting teen girls online. Authorities had begun investigating him when he was just 17.
The Psychology Behind the Horror
These aren’t just “troubled teens.” According to the NCA and psychological experts, the driving force behind these communities isn’t purely financial gain or sexual gratification — it’s infamy and internal status.

The NCA emphasized that these networks are not hiding — they operate openly on platforms like:
- Discord
- Telegram
- Reddit clones
- Encrypted social media groups
- Even video game lobbies and roleplay servers
They speak the same digital language, use the same emojis, and move across the same social platforms that millions of teens use innocently every day.
Biggar stated plainly:
“These groups are not lurking on the dark web. They exist in the same online world and platforms young people use on a daily basis.”
What’s Being Done — and What Isn’t
The UK government is working with:
- Tech companies to identify and remove coordinated abuse
- Psychologists to understand behavioral drivers
- Safeguarding agencies and police forces to intervene early
- International law enforcement partners to track cross-border activity
Yet with most participants under 18 and platforms often slow to respond, law enforcement is struggling to balance prosecution, prevention, and protection.
And it’s not just a UK problem — the U.S. is directly mentioned as a growing hotbed of this behavior.
