Federal authorities have arrested Brian J. Cole, Jr., 30, of Woodbridge, Virginia, charging him with transporting and planting the two improvised explosive devices found outside the RNC and DNC headquarters on the night of January 5, 2021.
The devices, which were discovered the following afternoon amid the escalating chaos surrounding Capitol security, were fully capable of causing death or catastrophic injury. Their placement outside two national political institutions triggered one of the most extensive domestic investigations in recent memory — one that remained unsolved for nearly half a decade.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced the arrest alongside Attorney General Pamela Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, Washington Field Office Assistant Director Darren B. Cox, and Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, signaling the gravity of the breakthrough and the renewed pressure federal agencies placed on the case this year.
According to the criminal complaint, Cole allegedly purchased numerous bombmaking components throughout 2019 and 2020 — including galvanized pipes, end caps, steel wool, battery connectors, 14-gauge wiring, timers, alligator clips, and other materials that FBI laboratory analysts later identified within the neutralized devices.
Surveillance footage captured a hooded individual carrying a backpack and moving methodically through Southeast Washington between 7:34 p.m. and 8:18 p.m. on January 5. The same individual appeared on multiple cameras adjusting eyeglasses, wearing Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes, and walking the precise route where both devices were ultimately found.
Federal investigators then obtained historical cell-site records showing that Cole’s phone engaged with multiple towers along the exact surveillance-mapped path — down to the same minutes that the suspect appears on video. The FBI’s CAST team confirmed that the device’s movements corresponded almost identically with the suspect’s route between the RNC and DNC locations.
The IEDs, both of which were rendered safe by the U.S. Capitol Police Hazardous Devices Section, contained a main explosive charge, a timer-based fuzing system, and a hardened metal pipe casing — characteristics consistent with destructive devices intended to cause mass harm.
FBI Director Kash Patel noted that the case was re-examined “from the ground up” after he and Deputy Director Bongino assumed their roles earlier this year. Investigators re-ran forensic models, reconstructed timelines, revisited earlier evidence, and re-tested multiple data sets to identify new leads. “Even five years later,” Patel said, “the FBI does not walk away from threats against the American people.”
U.S. Attorney Pirro called the arrest a “critical step in restoring clarity to an incident that has carried national weight for years,” emphasizing that no act of attempted political violence goes unanswered. Assistant Director Darren B. Cox added, “The FBI does not forget. We do not give up. And we do not relent.”
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and investigated jointly by the FBI Washington Field Office, the U.S. Capitol Police, ATF, the Metropolitan Police Department, and federal forensic analysts.
Cole remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

This is a thorough and well-researched account, presenting complex investigative details with clarity and precision. The careful documentation of evidence, timelines, and official statements reflects meticulous reporting—truly commendable work.
Thank you very much — I appreciate that. The goal is always to present the full picture with accuracy, context, and zero shortcuts. When something this serious unfolds, the public deserves a clear record of what happened, how investigators reached their conclusions, and why the case matters now. I’m glad the depth and structure came through. 😎
Absolutely, your commitment to thoroughness and clarity really shows. Providing the full picture with context and accuracy is invaluable, especially on serious matters. It’s clear you put great care into presenting the facts responsibly, and that makes your work both trustworthy and impactful.
Thank you — that really means a lot. I believe the full picture matters, especially with serious topics, and we’ll always do our best to present the facts clearly and responsibly. 😎
I saw this on the news tonight. I know you recently posted an article about this and the time that has gone by since the bombs were planted. Congrats to Federal investigators. The guy seemed like a ghost the way he appeared and disappeared and I’m sure they will figure out how he did that. He couldn’t have been that smart though as he was carrying his phone with him.
Thanks for following this story. I’d like to hear why this guy did what he did. They may never know but I hope, if found guilty, that he spends a good amount of time behind bars reflecting on what he did.
You’re very welcome, Chris — it’s remarkable how long this case stayed unresolved, and you’re right: he moved like a ghost for years. The phone data was ultimately his undoing, but the level of coordination it took to stay hidden this long shows why the investigation stretched across multiple agencies and timelines.
Motive is still the biggest unanswered piece. Sometimes these cases reveal a clear reason, and sometimes the “why” is never fully recovered — especially when someone operates in silence for that long. If the evidence holds and he’s found guilty, accountability will matter — his actions put people’s lives at risk, and the consequences should reflect that.
Thanks again for your insight, Chris — it’s always greatly appreciated. I hope you have a great day. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for this reply. Hopefully, the evidence will hold and you are so right that the consequences should reflect the danger he put lives in.
Thanks again and I hope you have a great day as well. 🙂
