A 24-year-old unsolved murder gains renewed attention as federal investigators reopen critical leads
The FBI’s New York Field Office has announced a reward of up to $15,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for the 2001 homicide of Nancy Smith, a case that has remained unsolved for more than two decades but has never been abandoned by investigators.
Smith, 32 years old at the time, was found deceased inside her New Windsor, New York residence on December 5, 2001, at approximately 1:30 p.m. Family members discovered her after repeated attempts to reach her by phone went unanswered — a detail that still weighs heavily on the timeline. When authorities arrived, they determined she had suffered multiple stab wounds, confirming a violent and deeply personal attack.
The FBI, working alongside the New York State Police and the New Windsor Police Department, has renewed its investigative push into the case, utilizing advances in forensic science, enhanced DNA processing, and modern analytical techniques that were not available in 2001. Federal agents noted that long-dormant cases can shift dramatically when new technology is applied to preserved evidence, and they emphasized that even small details provided by the public can become pivotal turning points.
The agencies involved stress that they are committed to pursuing every lead until justice is achieved. For Smith’s family, the announcement represents more than an investigative update — it signals that her case has not been forgotten, and that federal authorities continue to work toward answers that have been missing for nearly 25 years.
The FBI is urging anyone with knowledge — whether firsthand, secondhand, or previously dismissed as insignificant — to come forward. Information can be provided by contacting the FBI New York Field Office at (212) 384-1000, the Town of New Windsor Police Department at (845) 563-4678, any local FBI office, or the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Tips may also be submitted anonymously at tips.fbi.gov.
Authorities emphasize that after more than two decades, silence is still the only thing protecting the person responsible — and even one tip may be enough to break a case that has waited far too long for justice.

It’s amazing how many cold cases have been solved because of new technological techniques. The other day I saw a story where college students were allowed to work with police on a cold case and they caught the guy because of the work done by the students.
I hope whoever did this pays in this world for the crime committed. There will eventually be justice either way.
Thank you for sharing this story.
You’re welcome, Chris — you’re absolutely right about that. New forensic tools, expanded DNA techniques, and fresh analytical methods have breathed life into cases that once seemed impossible to solve. It’s incredible to see students, researchers, and entire new generations helping bring resolution to families who have waited far too long for answers.
I share your hope for justice in this case. Whoever was responsible deserves to be held accountable here, in this world, for the life they took and the pain they caused. And if authorities continue pushing forward with the same determination they’ve shown recently, there’s a real chance this case can finally turn. Hopefully, once we accomplish more with A.G.E.N.C.Y. and continue building our capabilities, we’ll eventually be approved to help clear some of these cold cases ourselves — that’s one of our biggest goals.
I appreciate you taking the time to read and share your thoughts, Chris — I hope your day was well, and I hope you have a great day ahead. 😎
It is amazing how they can catch people that they would never suspect except for the new tools they have.
Thank you again for this post. It shows that new tools and methods can be successful in bringing closure to those who have had loved ones taken from their families.
I hope you have a great day as well. 🙂
