LOCATION: Moscow, Russia
ARRESTED: Yuri Bozoyan, CEO of Aeza Group
CHARGES: Leading a criminal organization, large-scale drug trafficking
LINKED TO: Doppelgänger disinformation network, BlackSprut darknet market, bulletproof hosting operations
ARREST DATE: April 2025
OFFICE RAIDED: St. Petersburg, in a former Prigozhin-linked building
INVESTIGATING AGENCIES: Russian law enforcement, cybercrime units
In a stunning development that may mark a fracture within Russia’s own digital underworld, Yuri Bozoyan, the CEO of notorious tech infrastructure provider Aeza Group, was arrested in Moscow on charges of leading a criminal organization and trafficking narcotics. The arrest follows a raid by Russian authorities on Aeza’s St. Petersburg office—a site once associated with Wagner Group founder Yevgeny Prigozhin’s propaganda networks.
Bozoyan’s arrest is more than just a domestic criminal case. It potentially unmasks the central infrastructure behind Doppelgänger, a sprawling Russian state-aligned disinformation campaign that has been mimicking Western news sites to push pro-Kremlin narratives into Europe and the United States. The arrest may also signal internal purging, selective enforcement, or power realignment within Russia’s cyber-espionage ecosystem.
Two additional Aeza employees, Maxim Orel and Tatyana Zubova, were also detained. All three now face charges under Article 210 of the Russian Criminal Code (organizing a criminal community) and Article 228.1 (drug trafficking).
Aeza: The Disinformation ISP
Founded in 2021, Aeza quickly became one of Russia’s go-to server rental and hosting services—but not for ordinary customers. Aeza has long operated under the radar as a “bulletproof” host, a type of infrastructure provider that deliberately ignores abuse reports and shelters illicit operations from law enforcement.
According to analysts at Recorded Future, Outpost24, and independent intelligence groups, Aeza servers have been consistently linked to:
- Doppelgänger, the disinformation network known for spoofing media sites like The Guardian and Der Spiegel.
- Malware operations including Lumma Stealer and Meduza Stealer, used for credential harvesting and espionage.
- Botnets, phishing operations, and command-and-control (C2) server networks.
Their infrastructure is widely believed to be rented via darknet forums, where anonymity, data sovereignty, and law enforcement evasion are high-value features. Aeza’s model mirrored that of other notorious “crime-tolerant” providers such as AbuseNet, CyberBunker, and HostSailor.
Digital Psy-Ops Meets Drug Cartel: BlackSprut and Beyond
Russian court documents further allege that Bozoyan and co-founder Arseny Penzev operated BlackSprut, a major darknet narcotics marketplace. BlackSprut is one of the largest drug platforms in Eastern Europe, rivaling dark web titans like OMG!, Kraken, and Mega.
Bozoyan’s server infrastructure reportedly powered BlackSprut’s encrypted communications, payment processing, and mirror sites—all protected under Aeza’s bulletproof model.
In February 2025, undercover agents purchased over 4 grams of mephedrone on the platform, allowing Russian cyber-narcotics investigators to begin dismantling parts of the operation. The drug sale became the legal trigger that law enforcement used to pierce through Aeza’s digital fortress.
Intel Note: The intersection of darknet drug markets and disinformation networks is not accidental—they are both fueled by the same infrastructure, often protected by the same hosting services, and sometimes coordinated by the same personnel. This is the true scope of hybrid warfare: propaganda, espionage, and narcotics—all run through the same servers.
Doppelgänger Campaign: Media Cloning as Weaponized Narrative Warfare
The Doppelgänger operation is one of the most ambitious digital disinformation campaigns in modern geopolitical history. Beginning around 2022, the campaign involved:
- Creating cloned versions of legitimate Western media websites.
- Publishing false news articles, doctored opinion pieces, and manipulated editorials that appear to come from trusted outlets.
- Boosting Russian geopolitical narratives, discrediting Ukraine, NATO, and Western leadership.
- Targeting English-, German-, and French-speaking audiences.
These clones were then pushed via bot networks, Telegram channels, and social media sockpuppets, reaching millions without triggering traditional content moderation filters.
Investigations into Doppelgänger point to infrastructure traced back to Aeza’s IP blocks, domain registrars, and backend servers. While Bozoyan has denied direct involvement in the past, metadata, threat telemetry, and traffic redirection analysis overwhelmingly implicate Aeza in enabling this information war.
Bigger Than Bozoyan: Internal Cleansing or Optics Play?
Bozoyan’s arrest—coming amid heightened international scrutiny of Russia’s cyber operations—may be part of a deeper internal calculus:
- Reputation Management: Russia could be offloading expendable assets to paint a picture of internal law enforcement action.
- Internal Power Realignment: With Prigozhin’s death, former Wagner-aligned structures like Aeza may be losing protection.
- Control the Narrative: If Doppelgänger operations are shifting to new infrastructure, Aeza may have become a liability instead of an asset.
Either way, this is a significant event in the evolving battlefield of digital warfare. The infrastructure behind one of the world’s most prolific propaganda and malware machines has just taken a direct hit—and that hit came not from the West, but from within.
The Silence is Loud
As of publication, Aeza Group has issued no formal statement, and Bozoyan remains in pretrial detention. Russian media outlets have only offered sparse, state-approved reporting. Western intelligence agencies, meanwhile, are likely dissecting the deeper implications of the arrest.
This is not the end of Doppelgänger. It’s the start of its mutation.
Stay vigilant. Infrastructure doesn’t lie. We don’t post. We expose the machinery.
