- Deliberate sabotage — the anchor was intentionally dropped to destroy subsea infrastructure.

But here’s the clincher: The ship dragged its anchor along the seabed for 1.5 days — unnoticed.

- December 25, 2024: The Eagle S (another foreign vessel) drags its anchor 62 miles, severing multiple cables. 3 crew are still under criminal investigation in Finland.
- January 2025: The Vezhen, suspected of damaging a key link between Gotland and Latvia, is briefly seized and then released — weather blamed, despite early sabotage concerns.
- Ongoing: A spike in submarine cable disruptions throughout the Baltic, stoking fears of a Russian hybrid warfare campaign using civilian shipping as plausible deniability fronts.
While some European governments are publicly leaning toward “accidental causes,” the pattern is too consistent, the infrastructure too critical, and the timing too strategic to dismiss.

What Sweden Said (and What They Didn’t)
The SHK did not accuse China of sabotage outright. But it did say:
“We cannot rule out that the anchor was deliberately deployed to damage seabed infrastructure.”
That is a huge statement for a national agency. Especially when paired with:

- Delayed notification
- Lack of chain box damage
- Partial deformation of the anchor itself
They’re walking the diplomatic tightrope — but their findings say it all.
Strategic Implications
If this were sabotage:
