A Breach That Should’ve Never Reached the Courts
DPP Law, a prominent British firm specializing in criminal defense, family law, actions against police, and military justice, has been fined after a catastrophic cybersecurity failure allowed attackers to steal and leak over 32GB of confidential client case data.
The information wasn’t just personal — it was explosive:
- Court documents
- Military disciplinary records
- Family law proceedings
- Police misconduct reports
- Police body camera footage
- Allegations of child abuse
- Legal strategy notes and expert witness files
This wasn’t just data. This was people’s lives, reputations, and freedom — published to the dark web.
What Happened?
Attackers brute-forced an inactive administrator account — one that didn’t use multi-factor authentication — and gained full access to DPP’s internal systems.
Once inside, they moved laterally, bypassed weak internal defenses, and quietly exfiltrated over 32 gigabytes of legal case files.
Despite being hit with a ransomware attack in June 2022, DPP initially claimed no data had been stolen, citing internal server logs and firewall records as evidence.
But there was a problem:
Their firewall didn’t log outbound data.
That’s right — they had no ability to detect whether the data was exfiltrated… because they never captured the traffic leaving the building.
It wasn’t until the UK National Crime Agency notified them — after seeing DPP client data circulating on the dark web — that the breach was confirmed.
Who Was Impacted?
- 306 criminal law clients
- 225 family law clients
- 14 in matrimonial disputes
- 137 individuals taking legal action against police
- 109 expert witnesses
That’s 791 confirmed identities, each tied to deeply sensitive or controversial legal situations — many involving state prosecution, police abuse, or child protection cases.
This wasn’t just a breach of systems.
This was a breach of trust, dignity, and potentially justice itself.
Why It’s More Than a Fine
The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) issued a £60,000 penalty against DPP Law for failing to “put appropriate measures in place to ensure the security of personal information held electronically.”
But the real cost may go far beyond that.
DPP Law is now:
- Facing multiple negligence claims from clients
- Being publicly challenged over its breach response
- Subject to reputational damage in the one profession where trust is everything
And let’s not forget — a complaint was filed by a client accused of sexually abusing a child, who was told by police that his accusation was now public knowledge on the dark web, due to DPP’s failure.
That’s not just a privacy issue. That’s a threat to life, liberty, and due process.
What This Reveals
This breach is a case study in legal system fragility:
- A single forgotten admin account without MFA
- No outbound traffic monitoring
- No zero-trust architecture
- No real breach detection
- No disclosure — until a law enforcement agency knocked on the door
And when it all failed, it was the clients — not the firm — who suffered.
DPP’s Response: Too Late, Too Defensive
DPP’s CEO, Sue Christopher, has said the firm fully cooperated with the ICO and plans to appeal the fine. She also claims the company now holds independent certifications to show they’re compliant with best practices.
But the damage is done.
Once your clients’ trauma becomes a downloadable file on Tor, there’s no certificate that patches that.
