The battle for healthcare security deepened this week as DaVita Inc., one of the world’s largest providers of dialysis services, confirmed that patient data has surfaced on a ransomware gang’s leak site.

The cybercriminal group Interlock, a relatively new but aggressive ransomware operation, claims to have stolen 1.51 terabytes of sensitive data from DaVita’s systems — and posted samples online to prove it.

In a statement issued Thursday, DaVita acknowledged the breach:

“A full investigation regarding this incident is still underway. We are working as quickly as possible and will notify any affected parties and individuals, as appropriate,” a spokesperson said.

The company added that it is “disappointed” by these actions against the healthcare community and pledged to share additional cybersecurity resources with vendors and partners to help raise defenses across the sector.

Impact: A Healthcare System Under Siege

DaVita operates more than 2,500 dialysis centers in the United States and hundreds more across 13 countries worldwide.
The company’s core mission — treating end-stage renal disease patients who require life-sustaining dialysis multiple times per week — means any disruption to its systems carries immediate risks to patient survival.

Earlier disclosures to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission revealed that parts of DaVita’s network had been encrypted during the attack.
While contingency plans were activated and patient care reportedly continued, the breach marks another escalation in the war against healthcare infrastructure.

In 2024 alone, DaVita treated over 281,100 patients across more than 3,000 outpatient centers —
a massive footprint now shadowed by serious cybersecurity concerns.

Interlock: A New Threat Emerges

According to cybersecurity analysts, Interlock ransomware first appeared in October 2024 —
and has rapidly built a reputation for aggressive leaks and high-profile targeting.

Of the 26 known victims posted to Interlock’s leak site so far, nearly half have been confirmed breaches, indicating a higher-than-average success rate for a newer gang.

Interlock has already claimed responsibility for other healthcare breaches, including the devastating attack on Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and its El Paso counterpart, which impacted the records of more than 530,000 individuals.

Now, DaVita joins a growing list of healthcare providers under siege.

A Healthcare Industry in Crisis

The DaVita breach is not an isolated event — it’s part of a worsening global trend.

Cybersecurity trackers report at least 133 ransomware attacks on healthcare facilities worldwide in the first quarter of 2025 alone —
an alarming spike compared to previous years.

In just the past week, multiple organizations have reported data breaches tied to ransomware attacks, including:

Kelly & Associates Insurance Group
Behavioral Health Resources
Hamilton Health Care System
Central Texas Pediatric Orthopedics
Medical Express Ambulance Service

Each breach carries the chilling threat of exposed medical records, disrupted operations, and extortion for silence.

Adding to the crisis, Yale New Haven Health System recently disclosed a catastrophic breach where 5.5 million patients had their information stolen in a cyberattack earlier this year.
