The largest telecommunications company in Africa, MTN Group, has confirmed a significant cybersecurity breach impacting customer data across multiple countries. The Johannesburg-based telecom giant — which boasts more than 200 million subscribers in over 20 nations — revealed on Thursday that an unauthorized third party accessed personal customer information tied to portions of its system.
According to MTN’s official statement, the breach involved “unauthorised access to personal information of some MTN customers in certain markets.” However, the company has not yet disclosed how many individuals are affected, nor the full scope of the data exposed. As of now, investigations are ongoing.
Law Enforcement and Internal Response
MTN reported the incident to the South African Police Service and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), also known as the Hawks, who handle high-level crimes such as cyberattacks and financial crimes. In addition, MTN has alerted law enforcement authorities in other countries where it operates, including Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, and Côte d’Ivoire.
Despite the breach, MTN emphasized that its core network, billing systems, and financial services infrastructure remain secure and fully functional. “At this stage,” the company stated, “we have no evidence suggesting that customer accounts, mobile money wallets, or financial transactions have been compromised.”
Still, major gaps remain. MTN has refused to answer critical questions:

- Which markets (countries) were affected?
- How the breach occurred?
- Who may be responsible for the intrusion?
No cybercriminal group has publicly claimed responsibility for the attack as of Friday.

The breach comes amid a disturbing trend of escalating cyberattacks against South African corporations. Last year, Cell C, another major telecommunications provider, suffered a breach that resulted in customer data leaking onto the dark web. In parallel, Astral Foods, South Africa’s largest poultry producer, reported over $1 million in financial losses following a cyberattack that crippled its operations for several days.
South Africa has faced sustained targeting by cybercriminals in recent years, triggering the development of national cybersecurity policies like the Cybercrimes Act (effective since December 2021) and sector-specific frameworks aimed at safeguarding critical infrastructure. Nevertheless, enforcement challenges, resource constraints, and evolving cyberattack sophistication continue to hinder national resilience.
In particular, telecoms are prime targets due to the sensitive metadata, SIM-linked identities, financial services (such as mobile money platforms), and national ID integration embedded within subscriber records. A breach at a company the size of MTN not only risks private consumer information but could potentially create national security vulnerabilities across multiple African states.
Market Implications
MTN Group — which generated $9 billion in revenue last year — holds a dominant position in South Africa, Nigeria, and Ghana, markets highly dependent on mobile banking, digital identity services, and remote communications. A breach of this magnitude could undermine consumer trust, regulatory stability, and investor confidence in one of Africa’s few transnational tech success stories.
As cyberwarfare increasingly moves from espionage into financial disruption, personal targeting, and infrastructure destabilization, attacks like this serve as a wake-up call: telecommunications networks are no longer just about making calls — they are battlefields of the digital age.
MTN has pledged to notify affected customers individually as investigations proceed, but has provided no public timeline for full disclosure or remediation.
