A spearphishing campaign targeting senior leaders of the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) — a prominent international organization representing exiled members of China’s Uyghur minority — was uncovered in March 2025. The operation, believed to have started as early as May 2024, used a poisoned software download disguised as a legitimate Uyghur-language spellcheck tool.
Crafted with precision and cultural familiarity, the malware payload was hidden inside a file that mimicked an open-source linguistic tool trusted by the community.
