A ransomware attack has compromised the personal information of thousands of residents in Union County, Pennsylvania, revealing the growing vulnerability of local governments amid a surge of cyberattacks nationwide.
Discovered on March 13, the breach affected sensitive government systems and led to the unauthorized extraction of confidential data. County officials confirmed that information tied to law enforcement activity, court cases, and county business was stolen — including Social Security numbers and driver’s license details.
“The affected information appears to be mostly related to individuals involved with County law enforcement, court-related matters, and/or other County business,” the county said in a public notice.
Federal law enforcement has been alerted, and third-party cybersecurity firms have been brought in to assist with the recovery and investigation. Union County, which serves a population of over 40,000, has not disclosed which services were disrupted or when full functionality will return. As of now, no ransomware gang has claimed responsibility.
Residents directly impacted will receive formal written notification after officials complete their review. Meanwhile, the county claims to have enhanced its cybersecurity defenses to mitigate future threats — but the damage may already be done.
Union County is just one of several local governments under cyber siege in the early months of 2025.
Last week, Strafford County, New Hampshire — with over 133,000 residents — reported a major network interruption from a similar attack. Communication systems have been significantly disrupted, and county officials are scrambling to maintain essential services while their investigation unfolds.
“Some of our systems will remain offline to ensure a safe and full restoration,” a spokesperson said, declining to identify who may be behind the attack or provide a timeline for recovery.
These incidents reflect a disturbing trend: U.S. municipalities are becoming primary targets in a broader cyberwar, often ill-equipped to defend against the evolving digital battlefield. As ransomware groups grow bolder and more sophisticated, the public bears the brunt — left to wonder who’s watching their data, and who’s protecting it.
