THE NEW FRONT IN CYBER WARFARE: FARMS AND FOOD
In 2025, ransomware gangs didn’t just escalate—they pivoted to choke points. And few sectors are more vulnerable, more vital, or more underprotected than food and agriculture.
According to newly surfaced data presented during the RSA Conference in San Francisco, cyberattacks against the global food and agriculture industry have more than doubled in just the first quarter of 2025, compared to the same period the year before. The primary driver? Ransomware—an attack type now responsible for over half of all known threat actor activity in this critical infrastructure sector.
The data was presented by Jonathan Braley, director of the Food and Agriculture Information Sharing and Analysis Center (Food and Ag-ISAC), who warned that the numbers likely underrepresent the true scale of the crisis.
“A lot of it never gets reported,” Braley said. “So a ransomware attack happens and we never get the full details. I wish companies would be more open… so the rest of us can prevent it.”
ATTACK WAVE TIMELINE
The first wave began in late 2024, with a surge traced back to Clop’s exploitation of a widely used file sharing platform. But even when Clop’s figures are removed from the tally, groups like RansomHub and Akira continue to target food-sector networks with unrelenting frequency.
Food and Ag-ISAC reported:
- 31 ransomware attacks in January 2025
- 35 attacks in February
- 18 attacks in March
That totals 84 incidents in Q1 alone—double the number reported in Q1 2024, with unknown figures likely hidden beneath a blanket of unreported breaches and quiet ransom payments.
CASES THAT GOT PUBLIC
Among the most notable attacks:
- South Africa’s largest chicken producer was hit in March, with reported losses exceeding $1 million, causing major supply chain disruption.
- Southern Siberia’s largest dairy processing plant was also hit, severely delaying regional milk and dairy exports.
These attacks not only cripple production but also reverberate downstream—affecting delivery schedules, consumer prices, and even food security at national levels.
WHY FOOD IS THE PERFECT TARGET
Food and agriculture systems are often highly centralized, with just-in-time delivery models that leave no room for operational downtime. That makes them prime targets for ransomware actors who rely on urgency and panic to force quick payments.
Braley emphasized another persistent vulnerability:
“This industry runs on legacy hardware. Outdated industrial control systems. Old software patched around the edges. These systems were never designed for a threat model like today’s.”
Indeed, aging infrastructure, fragmented cybersecurity oversight, and minimal digital modernization budgets make these organizations easy prey for mid- and top-tier ransomware crews alike.
A SECTOR UNDERREPORTED AND UNDERDEFENDED
What sets the food and agriculture sector apart from other high-risk industries—like finance, energy, or healthcare—is its lack of formal cybersecurity mandates, and its cultural reluctance to report incidents publicly.
Food and Ag-ISAC’s data gathering required:
- Open-source intelligence
- Dark web surveillance
- Voluntary input from member organizations
- Private collaboration with the National Council of ISACs
Even then, Braley acknowledges, this is likely the tip of the iceberg.
