After a massive December breach that exposed deeply personal data from over 6,500 schools, including Toronto’s entire school district, PowerSchool did what most ed-tech conglomerates do when the truth gets too loud: they wrote a check and hoped it would all go away. According to PowerSchool, the hacker promised to delete the data and even sent a video as “proof” of deletion. Corporate spin called it “contained.”
But the data wasn’t deleted. And now, months later, that same stolen data is being used to extort Toronto District School Board (TDSB) officials again.
That’s right—after getting paid, the hacker came back. Same data. Same breach. New ransom.
Welcome to the illusion of cyber peace.
On Wednesday, TDSB Director of Education Clayton La Touche informed 235,000 families that they had been re-targeted. His letter confirmed what should’ve been obvious from the start: there’s no such thing as honor among thieves—and that includes the ones in boardrooms who greenlight these hush-money payoffs.
“PowerSchool informed school boards that the data accessed… had been deleted,” La Touche wrote, “but there was a risk that the threat actors would not honor their commitment…”
Risk? This wasn’t a risk. It was a guarantee. You don’t outsource data security to criminals and expect a pinky swear to mean anything.
Here’s what’s really at stake:
- Health care numbers
- Medical disorders and accommodations
- Special education details
- Residency status
- Disciplinary actions
- Parent contact info
- Student names and dates of birth going back to 1985
We’re talking about the complete digital history of children, in the hands of people with no moral boundary—and now weaponized twice.
And PowerSchool? Their response was a corporate sigh:
“We sincerely regret these developments…” Translation: We got caught holding the bag. Again.
No clear comment on the Toronto situation. No refund for false assurance. Just PR damage control.
Let’s be clear—this isn’t just a “bad actor” problem. This is a bad system problem.
Because paying a ransom isn’t a fix—it’s fuel. It tells every cybercriminal on the map that extortion works. It reinforces the idea that your personal information is just another bargaining chip — something that can be traded, threatened, and sold without consequence.
We say it all the time — and we mean it every time:
NEVER PAY A RANSOM.
YOU MAKE IT WORSE.
You don’t negotiate with people who already violated the trust. You don’t reward the act that caused the breach. And you sure as hell don’t hand over money to the same hand that’s holding the match to your system.
Never means never.
Because every time someone caves, they don’t just fail to stop the fire — they spread it.
This marks the second ransomware crisis for TDSB in less than a year.
Yes — that’s right. Oh! Wait!
Technically? It’s the third.
First came the June 2024 LockBit attack, which cornered the board with a 13-day ransom window. Then the December PowerSchool breach, where data was stolen and ransomed.
And now? That same stolen data is back on the table — being used for a second extortion attempt.
So if we’re being real — and we always are — this isn’t a follow-up attack.
It’s a recycled crime fueled by the last payout and fed by the same incompetence.
And TDSB?
Still caught in the same trap, hoping for different results while playing by a rulebook written by crooks.
Four school boards have received new extortion letters this week alone, according to sources familiar with the case. This isn’t an isolated targeting. It’s a full-scale re-victimization campaign, enabled by naive compliance and poor digital defense.
What we’re seeing here is the cyber equivalent of double jeopardy, except in this rigged courtroom, the criminal gets to charge you again—and again—until you run out of money, data, or credibility.
No amount of spin from PowerSchool can patch the betrayal.
No ransom payment can reverse the damage.
And no school district should have to face this while corporations duck accountability behind legal shields and insurance loopholes.
This is not a fluke. It’s a business model.
And right now, the students are the currency.
