Category: Financial Cybercrime Syndicate
Features: RICO conspiracy, multi-platform social engineering, SIM-swapping, virtual wallet hijacking, real-world hardware theft, laundering through luxury assets
Delivery Method: Database leaks, phishing, iCloud breaches, social media manipulation, impersonation via AnyDesk and MFA resets
Threat Actor: Ad hoc cybercrime network with roots in online gaming communities; coordinated by key figures including Malone Lam and Conor Flansburg
THE DIGITAL EMPIRE BUILT ON LIES, LOOT, AND LUXURY
The Department of Justice has charged 12 additional suspects in a sweeping RICO case tied to a sprawling cryptocurrency theft ring responsible for laundering hundreds of millions of dollars. The conspiracy, now sprawling across multiple states and jurisdictions, is being treated not just as a cybercrime spree — but as a modern organized crime syndicate.
At the center of this digital crimewave is a generation of young, tech-savvy manipulators who didn’t need weapons to pull off some of the largest crypto heists in recent U.S. history — just a phone, a screen, and the psychological playbook of a con artist.
THE GENESIS OF A CRIMINAL NETWORK
According to the DOJ, the group evolved from relationships cultivated on online gaming platforms — an increasingly common breeding ground for coordinated cyber operations. Starting in late 2023, the crew began acquiring compromised data from dark web breaches, targeting high-net-worth crypto holders based on metadata and transactional behavior. Once identified, these victims were ensnared in sophisticated social engineering campaigns.
THE HEISTS: SOCIAL ENGINEERING, SCREEN MIRRORS, AND LOCATION TRACKING
In one major attack, Malone Lam and Jeandiel Serrano, aged just 20 and 21 respectively, used a blend of psychological manipulation and digital intrusion to siphon $245 million from a single Washington, D.C. victim. The operation involved convincing the target they were under active cyberattack, gaining their trust under the guise of “helping them secure their account.”
They weren’t just hiding behind screens — they were syncing with their victims’ real lives. Lam reportedly breached iCloud accounts to track physical locations, while another associate, Marlon Ferro, broke into a New Mexico home to steal physical crypto hardware wallets, according to the indictment.
One breach alone netted $14 million — another, $2.9 million.
THE CREDITOR SCAM: TARGETING A GENESIS AFFILIATE
In August 2024, Lam and four unnamed suspects escalated their operation by targeting a creditor tied to the crypto lender Genesis. According to blockchain analyst ZachXBT, who assisted law enforcement, the group posed as Gemini exchange support agents and tricked the victim into resetting their MFA, then transferring funds to a malicious wallet.
Using AnyDesk, they mirrored the victim’s screen, observed keystrokes in real time, and extracted private wallet keys — the digital equivalent of cracking open a bank vault.
A video of the theft captures their reaction as the crypto flooded in:
“We got it!” someone yells.
“Do you know how much money that is? Holy sh—”
THE SPOILS: MANSIONS, CLUBS, JETS, AND ARROGANCE
The stolen funds didn’t sit idle. The group allegedly used forged identities to rent mansions in Florida and California, flew on private jets to the Hamptons, and burned through millions in upscale nightclubs. Prosecutors say they spent $4 million in Los Angeles alone over just three weeks.
This wasn’t quiet crime. This was flaunted wealth, dripping with ego. One alleged ringleader, Conor Flansburg, bragged in a chat:
“[H]ow are we all so much better than everyone… [H]ow have we surpassed all the kids that have been around for 8 years, in a few months[?]”
Four key suspects — Kunal Mehta, Hamza Doost, Joel Cortez, and Evan Tangeman — are now facing charges for laundering the proceeds through a complex web of fronts, shell accounts, and cash-based transactions.
THE ENDGAME: A CELL PHONE, A BOAT, AND A RICO CHARGE
As the law closed in, some suspects took desperate measures. On September 18, 2024, after being tipped off by an off-duty officer that law enforcement was en route, Lam walked to a boat dock in Miami’s Biscayne Bay — and tossed his phone into the water.
But it wasn’t enough to erase the evidence. Not this time.
TRJ SNAPSHOT
This case isn’t just a takedown — it’s a signal. A new class of criminal is emerging: born in game lobbies, forged in Discord servers, and matured into full-blown syndicates. They know the systems. They know the loopholes. And they don’t need guns — just breached data, psychological leverage, and a high-speed connection.
This was cybercrime with a mansion key. But the feds are watching.
And now, so are we.

This is very interesting, John. I know little to nothing about the crypto world so I wouldn’t be able to trust putting any money into it. That said, I know some people have made lots of money investing in it. I’m glad they caught these guys and I’m hoping that reports like these help keep those who have crypto currency safer.
Thanks, Chris — I really appreciate you saying that.
And honestly, you’re not alone. A lot of people feel uneasy about the crypto space — and for good reason. The technology moves fast, the rules are still being written, and the platforms that handle billions in assets often don’t have the same protections as traditional banks. That makes it a breeding ground for scams, manipulation, and sophisticated social engineering like we saw in this case.
What’s scary is these guys weren’t just coding from the shadows — they were blending hacking with real-world tactics like home invasions and impersonation. It’s a new kind of criminal model that mixes digital intrusion with physical presence.
Reports like this help expose the cracks in the system — but more importantly, they push people to be more cautious, more aware, and better informed. So even if crypto’s not your thing, just knowing how these schemes unfold helps protect all of us moving forward.
Thanks again for reading and staying in the fight with us. 😎
You’re welcome, and thank you for this reply, John. It is interesting how you described how this criminal model mixes digital intrusion with physical presence. People will have to be aware of efforts to steal from them on two fronts. Being aware of how these thefts are occurring should help those involved to be more aware as you noted.
You’re welcome, Chris! Hopefully, people become more aware. These days, a lot of people ignore the seriousness of cybersecurity and leave themselves vulnerable to these criminals. 😎
