In what’s being called one of the largest decentralized finance (DeFi) breaches of the year, Cetus, a major trading protocol operating on the Sui blockchain, was hacked early Thursday morning — resulting in $223 million in lost funds across multiple digital wallets and liquidity pools.
The incident is another severe blow to the DeFi ecosystem, which has already lost billions this year due to protocol-level exploits, phishing-linked rug pulls, and wallet hijackings.
The Attack: 223 Million Lost — And Counting
Cetus confirmed the breach via social media after freezing platform operations and invoking an emergency pause protocol on their smart contracts.
“We took immediate action to lock our contract preventing further theft of funds,” the company stated. They later clarified that $162 million of the funds were ‘paused’, implying they froze access or limited further withdrawals from smart contracts — though what this means operationally remains unclear.
While Cetus claimed it is “actively pursuing recovery paths,” over $50 million in funds have already been siphoned into external wallets — with multiple forensics teams confirming token obfuscation strategies now underway.
This includes:
- Cross-chain swaps via unregulated DEX aggregators
- Splitting large transactions into “dust” for tracking obfuscation
- Transfer through layer-2 bridges to wash exposure
Unraveling the Exploit: Vulnerability or Manipulation?
There’s currently no official postmortem. However, DeFi researchers and on-chain analysts have pointed to two possible exploit vectors:
Protocol Logic Exploit:
Early messages in Cetus’ Discord suggested a code vulnerability that allowed unauthorized manipulation of the contract’s logic around liquidity provision or withdrawal ratios.
Price Oracle Manipulation:
Some blockchain security firms suspect a flash loan attack or price oracle manipulation, where the attacker artificially adjusted coin valuations just long enough to drain pools before the system could correct.
In either case, the attacker likely had deep knowledge of smart contract operations and access to tools that simulate DeFi logic in advance — hallmarks of a highly experienced actor.
Context: Why This Hack Matters in 2025
Cetus is not a fringe exchange. According to April 2025 disclosures, the protocol had handled over $50 billion in total trading volume, putting it squarely in the top tier of next-gen decentralized platforms.
Its collapse — partial or full — will erode confidence in Sui blockchain-native applications, and reignite fears that DeFi remains fundamentally insecure without rigorous third-party auditing, enforced access control layers, and failsafe contract logic.
This comes just three months after the $1.4 billion Bybit hack, which was tied to North Korean Lazarus Group-affiliated actors, and just days after Coinbase confirmed an insider data breach that led to millions siphoned from 70,000 customers.
According to Chainalysis, over $2 billion in digital assets were stolen from cryptocurrency platforms in 2024 alone.

Open code isn’t secure code — not without adversarial simulation and constant threat modeling.
When DeFi platforms optimize for growth over hardening, they leave backdoors wide open for actors who understand protocol math better than the people building it.
Whether the $162 million “paused” funds are recoverable remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: the attacker is already fragmenting the loot across decentralized bridges, and the longer the trail cools, the lower the recovery odds drop.
This isn’t just about Cetus.
This is a wake-up call to every Sui-based protocol, every EVM-clone, every unverified oracle plug-in.
The ledger remembers — but it doesn’t prevent.
