Federal investigators have deployed multiple specialized FBI units from across the Gulf Coast and the FBI Laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, to assist local authorities in the ongoing search for 15-year-old Ja’Derrius Minnieweather, whose disappearance has prompted an extensive recovery operation at a Louisiana landfill.
According to the FBI New Orleans Field Office, personnel from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Virginia have been mobilized to support the Baton Rouge Police Department, which requested federal assistance due to the complexity and hazardous nature of the search.
The operation is centered at the East Baton Rouge Parish North Landfill in Zachary, Louisiana, where investigators believe evidence relevant to the case may be located. Officials indicated the search could continue for several weeks.
Specialized FBI Resources Deployed
Federal authorities have assembled a multidisciplinary response involving some of the FBI’s most specialized forensic and hazardous environment teams.
Among the resources deployed are the FBI Laboratory’s Technical Hazards Response Unit (THRU) and the Evidence Response Team Unit (ERTU), along with experts from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s Team Adam.
Using forensic analysis and landfill assessment techniques, investigators have narrowed the search area to approximately 0.64 acres, containing an estimated 8,260 cubic yards of landfill material.
Searching a landfill presents extraordinary challenges for investigators. Conditions often include unstable terrain, heavy equipment operations, decomposing waste, hazardous materials, biological contaminants, and constantly changing environmental conditions. These factors require specialized planning, safety procedures, and forensic recovery techniques that differ significantly from traditional crime scene investigations.
Technical Hazards Response Unit
The FBI’s Technical Hazards Response Unit provides expertise for searches conducted in hazardous environments.
Its responsibilities include:
- Hazardous materials assessment
- Medical and responder safety
- Environmental monitoring
- Logistical coordination
- Technical guidance for operating within dangerous conditions
These capabilities help ensure search personnel can safely conduct prolonged recovery operations while minimizing risks posed by landfill environments.
Evidence Recovery Specialists
The FBI’s Evidence Response Team Unit, working alongside Evidence Response Team members from multiple FBI field offices, specializes in locating, documenting, collecting, preserving, and processing evidence in complex investigations.
Investigators utilize specialized mapping technology, forensic documentation procedures, search grids, evidence preservation protocols, and recovery techniques designed for difficult environments where evidence may be concealed beneath large volumes of material.
These resources significantly improve investigators’ ability to recover evidence that might otherwise remain undiscovered.
Team Adam Provides Missing Child Expertise
The search also includes assistance from Team Adam, a rapid-response program operated by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
Team Adam deploys experienced professionals to assist law enforcement agencies investigating complex missing child cases by providing search planning, incident management expertise, and technical recommendations that can improve recovery efforts.
Multi-Agency Response
The operation involves an extensive partnership among federal, state, and local agencies, including:
- FBI New Orleans Field Office
- FBI Baton Rouge Resident Agency
- FBI Lafayette Field Office
- FBI Lake Charles Field Office
- FBI Alexandria Field Office
- FBI Shreveport Field Office
- FBI Monroe Field Office
- FBI Jackson Field Office (Mississippi)
- FBI Mobile Field Office (Alabama)
- FBI Technical Hazards Response Unit
- FBI Evidence Response Team Unit
- Homeland Security Investigations (HSI)
- National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (Team Adam)
- Baton Rouge Police Department
- East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office
- Office of Mayor-President Sid Edwards
- Governor’s Office of Homeland Security
- Louisiana State Police
- Louisiana National Guard
Despite the significant federal involvement, officials emphasized that the Baton Rouge Police Department remains the lead investigative agency responsible for directing the search and overseeing the investigation.
Search May Continue for Weeks
Officials cautioned that searches involving landfill environments are often lengthy due to the enormous volume of material requiring examination and the need to carefully preserve potential evidence throughout the process.
The FBI stated that every available specialized resource is being brought to the operation to maximize the chances of successfully locating Ja’Derrius Minnieweather and returning him to his family.
Special Agent in Charge Jonathan Tapp of the FBI New Orleans Field Office said the combined expertise of the FBI’s specialized response teams and Team Adam will strengthen the ongoing search effort while supporting local investigators throughout the operation.
Authorities have requested that any investigative questions regarding the case be directed to the Baton Rouge Police Department, which continues serving as the primary agency overseeing the investigation.

I had not heard of this case so I looked up Ja’Derrius Minnieweather on the internet. I found that on June 26, 2026, Mayor-President Sid Edwards held a news conference at Baton Rouge Police Headquarters to update the public about the missing 15-year-old. There is a suspect in the case and anyone interested in that information can look here:
https://www.brla.gov/m/newsflash/Home/Detail/1732
What is so impressive about this case are the number of agencies assisting in efforts to find out what happened to Ja’Derrius. The number of agencies you listed that are cooperating on this case shows us how important one life is in the eyes of many who live in the U.S. Your description of this search to find evidence makes this effort even more impressive.
I hope it doesn’t take too long and I hope they find the evidence they are looking for before having to go through that entire part of the landfill. May justice be done.
Thank you for this detailed article.
You’re very welcome, Chris.
I appreciate you taking the time to research the case further and share that additional information. The level of cooperation involved in this investigation really is remarkable. When so many agencies bring their resources and expertise together, it demonstrates a commitment to pursuing every available lead and leaving no stone unturned.
Landfill searches are among the most challenging types of investigations because they require an incredible amount of time, manpower, and precision. Hopefully investigators are able to recover the evidence they are searching for as soon as possible so the case can continue moving forward and Ja’Derrius’ family can finally receive the answers they have been waiting for.
Thank you again for reading the article and for taking the time to leave another thoughtful comment, Chris. I greatly appreciate it. I hope you have a great day. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for this response. Like you I’m hoping investigators are able to recover enough evidence to give them what they are looking for. Ja’Derrius’ family will than at least have some answers.
The amount of work done on this case does speak volumes. Every person matters.
Thank you again, John, and I hope you have a great evening!😊
